How do you guys feel about surveying as a career?

We're outdoors all the time and go to unmapped terrains to collect topographical data. It's fun stuff. A great career to get into for those who love the outdoors.

My friend does this. He is 37 and literally has never had another job in his life. He started working with his dad part time as a teenager and it became his full time job as an adult. He makes it sound pretty tedious but then again, do anything for two decades and it will probably become tedious right?

Mostly what he does is property lines of residential plots, either where there is a dispute or because someone is about to forfeit their place because they've been missing payments or whatever.

Although if somehow all you do is make topo's (I imagine this would be a difficult job to maintain, unless you made new topo's of the same regions every year) you aren't COMPLETELY evil in my eyes.

I actually haven't paid income tax since I was 19.

Not to mention deliberately mapping out the roads for a logging crew is (in my opinion) a good bit worse then paying taxes that may or may not end up in a logging companies pocket...

Not OP, here. And I also have a burning hate for companies that do clear cuts in undeveloped areas and the government that supports and allows this.

How is it ridiculous? Granted, there is the whole "hey man, I gotta make a living too" aspect, but coming to an outdoor board to brag about it? That's a bit much in my opinion. This poor sap apparently thinks what he does is GOOD for the outdoors, since he obviously enjoys it. That makes about as much sense to me as a logger who really likes forests, regardless of the fact that he has a direct hand in destroying them.

Come to Germany. Every time we're done surveying the country, we do it all over again. It's the best-mapped country in the world, with 1:10000 maps of the whole republic, including subsurface and geology, and larger maps of all construction sites.

At least where I'm from, loggers work sustainably, and the volume and biodiversity of standing wood increased year by year for the past 3 decades. Local clear cuts don't destroy forests, and the monoculture you still see in many areas isn't up-to-date practice anymore, due to vulnerability to storms.

I'm from Germany. Our forests were NEVER in a natural state. As soon as they started to grow after the last ice age, humans already moved in and cut the valleys clear, drove their pigs in to get food and built structures from wood.
The nobility (and poor peasants) destroyed them on a large scale until they looked like parks in the whole country.
Ever since then they're recovering. Forestry managers make sure invasive species don't take over, hunters replace the predators we lack so the saplings aren't all eaten by dear, and it's a huge source of sustainable building material and fuel on the side.

If humans stopped meddling today, the result would be nothing but sick trees plagued by beetles and starving deer for the next 200 years.

Speaking as a surveyor and I have done rod man up to CAD work it depends on what area you are in and what type of work you are doing.

You will get a education on gear and even diet in the first week. The fun part for me was the GPS mapping and locating and identifying of preexisting structures in "hostile" areas. The only issues I ran across were heat, humidity, snakes, animals, bugs, squatters, unlicensed pharmaceutical manufacturers, pot farmers, and co-workers. The pay is not great and dealing with the engineers and clients is less than pleasant but with the right firm if you keep track of your hours and expenses you get to be your own boss while on site/location.
