>>826825I'd say just ask around and see rockhounds. You get the small fringe group of guys who likes to be all protective, but 99% of them will give you sites to go to, just carry a notepad. Directions are always like a treasure hunt: "Follow this highway past the red building, turn left, walk 300 ft down the side of the hill, and look for turquoise." Also in your state I'd check out fire agate spots (really famous for that stuff, it's up there with opal for looking cool), and also you've got the Rockhound State Park in NM I think where you can dig for free and collect.

If you can't find any they sell it in the gift shop, but it's much easier to find low grade rubies and sapphires and stuff, although I think it's salted. Also consider driving to Grave's Mountain in GA when it's open (a few times a year.) We're world famous for the rutile there.
