Cicadas, and the 17 year variety. Having a cycle that is on a prime number prevents predators from being able to regularly predict when the adults will emerge.

Cicadas.

They swarm every 13 years. They dont bite or sting. They are large as shit and its fun to watch people run from them. In 2003 there was a different type of brood that swarmed. I saw a lady crash her car into a guardrail at 60mph freaking out and trying to swat one in her car. These things are fucking great.

Yeah I used to live on a farm and they used to put me to sleep. These little bugs bring me back to the good old days. We used a canoe paddle to swat at these and carpenter bees when they're in mid flight. I miss that farm.

I've never used them, but fish love them. Sometimes here in Missouri you can't get anything to bite during cicada season because the fish have been gorging themselves.

Has it been 17 years already? I've already seen 2 instances of 17-year cicadas. Why would there be another so soon? We have the 17-year cycle ones where I live (eastern USA), not the 13-year ones.

Actually they do 'bite'. It's funny, they don't seem to recognize humans as living creatures and mistake us for trees, so every now and then when you have one on you it will try to ram its proboscis into your 'bark' to drink your 'sap', which I will add, is pretty fucking painful.

These guys are pretty tame for insects.

Don't get them close to your ear.

I know some overlap, but there has only been 2 extremely massive emergences in my area. However, some come out every single year. When the big 17-year cycle comes around they actually darken the sky here and the noise is deafening. The noise they make actually starts out chaotic but once 10s of 1,000s of them join in it becomes this wave of sound that rises and lowers rhythmically. It's very impressive and alien-like.

During that time it isn't safe to ride a motorcycle or bicycle in the area. Even driving a car can be dangerous because they can obstruct so much of the windshield with their guts.

I love the way they sound, but as a huge entomophobe, I'm not looking forward to this. I've been through this plague once before, it was a stressful time for me to say the least. But that buzz they make, makes me think of summer time. Great at night, and then I wake up the next day and barricade the house cause I ain't fucking going out there.

i'm not sure what time of day but 64 deg F is referring to the temperature a few inches down in the soil, not just air temp. If near trees you might also see little "tunnels" coming up from the ground, which is where the cicadas will emerge from, and they are a sign that they'll be coming out in the very near future

Every time I scroll over this thread I hear cicadas.
Like clearly, like they're all around, like when I was a kid at my grandpas farm, like when we used to sit around the campfire. I hear them OP, like when you step off a boat and still feel the waves.
