personally i keep track of a lifelist with a photo of every species of fish i have caught hook and line. currently i am at 114 species. anyone else do the same?

I don't do this with fish, but I do this with amphibians in NY.

Just recently started so I don't have that many, I think around 20 species is where I am at.

Plan to do the same thing with reptiles as well.

Yup, found a hellbender and an eastern spadefoot toad.

Last spring there were hundreds of dead mudpuppies in cormorant lake in becker co. mn. aka hellbenders sometimes I think, but maybe different species.

I used to keep them as pets.

Why are they dying?

Pollution or fertilizer can kill them. If it was fertilizer it would be by proxy through a bloom of microorganisms that reduce the oxygen levels of the water. This in turn will kill mudpuppies. Aside from that there's tons of different types of pollutants that can cause a kill or a kill by proxy.

Mudpuppies are not hellbenders, many people confuse the two. Hellbenders do not have external gills and are much bigger.

also, trying to care for strictly aquatic amphibians is very difficult. if you want a similar pet then get an axolotl because they are much easier to care for.

Last year was hard on mudpuppies in MN because of the drought. It concetrated runoff, and caused water temperatures to climb higher than usual.

It's not unusual for there to be a mudpuppy kill when the weather is like that here. They're more delicate than the fish, and even some of the fish had drought related population adjustments last year.
