has anyone worked as a camp councilor?

I have a job interview for a trip leader at an all boys summer camp tomorrow. I'm kind of excited. I've never Lead a hike before though, it's always been a cooperative venture.

4 years working for scouts canada, 1 year for the BSA, but.. i didn't really deal with kids too much, they always had leaders who did the disciplining.

I guess my job will be mostly leading campers on expeditions into the white mountains and things. I've been a camp councilor before, and I've hiked before, but I've never had to manage a hike of 5-15 people.

Oh, managing trips? will you be alone, or will there be at least one other staff member with you? When trips are done through groups like this (I worked for Northern tier last summer, guiding canoe trips) all the nitpicky stuff -food, ect is planned out for you, which helps, it basically becomes just 'go to commisary, get food, put in pack, go!' Managing groups isn't as hard as it might seem, you've just got to be confident in your skills, and be willing to share and teach the youth what they're willing to learn.

If you have a partner, you'll be fine. For the interview-just discuss your skills, how you want to share your love of the outdoors with others, and stuff like that, and they'll love it.

Yes, and I love every minute of it. One tip however, on many trips you will get people who think they know what they are doing and start doing something stupid, you need to be sure that you can keep authority even when they push back.

Yes, I applied and interviewed for a summer job (high school, at the time) at a Christian camp. The guy who interviewed me was very cool and was not interested at all in cramming religion down the campers' throats.
I started the job and found that my supervisor was all about "the religious experience". I quit in less than a week.

I used to organize camp counselors courses and abroad summer camps as touroperator for few years so I've trained and hired camp counselors
oh, I've also gave myself the course so technically I'm camp counselor too
all kneel before counselor god
