Alright /out/, let's have a firestarting thread
What do you carry to start fires while /out/?

Also, I'm interested in learning how to reliably start a fire in the rain, I recently went backpacking and couldn't get a fire started due to lack of dry kindling and wood
Is there a way around this?

And as fat as finding dry kindling when it is wet you could learn how to feather sticks. It is a really useful trick even when it isn't wet.

Ignition source? Lighter or storm matches most of the time. I have a Flint and steel but mostly for emergencies.

Tinder? Birch bark works great, old man's beard, pine cones/needles if dry enough. If I'm bringing my own dryer lint or cotton balls with some vegetable oil. If it's just a backyard fire I like those little paraffin and sawdust nuggets you get at the hardware store.

Storm matches in case the weather is incredibly shitty.

I also carry 2 cheap lighters as a backup because shit weights nothing.

Backup ferro ferod, too.

I usually use a a single tablet of fuel for my Esbit stove as kindling if the weather is bad. Shit burns like crazy.

I've been out in some shitty weather (rain, snow, golf-ball-size slushyballs falling out of the sky) and even with wet wood that hardly qualifies as "tinder", a flare burns hot enough for long enough to dry it out and get things going.

In the winter I carry two with me and two on my sled; summer I carry one or two in my pack.

Cycle them out every few years - Date of manufacture is printed on the flare, I usually don't carry anything more than 2 years old.
Older stuff I throw in my truck and use those for demos, and I do enough of those every year to keep my supplies in check.

I also carry lighters and carbide rocks for the times I have decent tinder and dry wood.
But when there's a situation and I need fire, i'm not going to fuck around, there will be a fire.

Gasoline will also help get things going. On a snowmobile or motorcycle, there's plenty of that to get a fire going. Don't think I'd carry that specifically for firestarting if I were into nonmotorized recreation though.

When traveling around the country in my car I'll keep a few cans of sterno. Its just goop filled with alcohol, so it can be smeared where ever for a quick fire starter or can be used to cook on directly.

It'll also dry out real fast if it's not stored airtight. (like when the lid wiggles loose from rattling around in the truck for a year or so.)

Sparker in my keychain, made from dead lighter, wet light fuel sealed in bottom. Fuel is made of cotton, olive oil, and beeswax. Spark onto fuel, which burns hot enough and long enough to dry out tinder so it'll catch. Only difference from what I do when everything's dry is I use about twice as much tinder and kindling when things are wet, so I can get a better coal bed going early. The wet light fuel was commercially sourced (bought in a package deal with my pocket bellows [no shill]), but when I run out I'll /diy/ some more. Good stuff.

I carry candles with me and use small pieces of them to start wet fuel.
Just place it on a log, put on the candle, then start to add kindling.
The flame will burn many minutes and reliably dry the wood above until it ignites.

Oh yeah, its not a replacement for a flare, but it can be used more times than a flare. Again, use when conditions apply.

And yes, it does dry out, the alcohol just evaporates away and leaves nothing. I'll usually bring one can per weekend camping trip and make sure I use most of it that evening both as a tool and as a toy.

Basically I brought several matchbooks with me (they're free, and I usually put them in a waterproof container), a zippo and a bic. Zippo's really useful when I'm trying to light during the storm

I usually bring a box of matches and a bic, and I'm pretty much good to go. If I'm going to be smoking my pipe I might bring my pipe lighter too, but that's more of a luxury than a practical item since the fuel in wick lighters will generally evaporate after several days. For tinder I just use feathersticks.

some fags like to rant about "muh fatwood" but really candles are cheap and they store well and pretty handy when you make a fire or other purposes.

sure i would use fatwood if i find it to preserve my candles. or if i'm ran out of candles because it's a long term shit. but as a city boy i don't feel particularly inclined to hunt for it or pay for it.

I used a hudsonbay tin inside a custom pouch that holds my fero rod. The lid of the tin has a 4x magnification so solar ignition. Inside I keep flent and steel, char cloth, horse hoof fungus, birch bark, sulfur matches, jute twine, mug wort, and a few small bits of fat wood.

If I'm in wet conditions I keep a few sticks of fat wood to help create a fire by scraping them with the spine of my knife and then igniting it with a fero rod. Then using the other pieces to extend the fire until I can get my bigger wood to catch. Then I remove the fat wood and reuse it.

I prefer using a bow drill but sometimes that method doesn't work (most the time everyone is inpatient and complains about the time it takes) so I keep my fire kit on me at all times to make things easier.

In my bags I go have the standard altoids tin that I can char materials with since I don't use the hudsonbay tin for that, and I do have a couple vasoline cotton balls as a lazy man's method. Also, you can bury material by your fire and char materials if you don't have a container.

Hardware stores carry them. Auto parts stores carry them. Walmart carries them. They're not too hard to find.

And they're about $10 for a 3-pack for the 15-minute ones. 30-min ones are a little bigger, more expensive (about $5/ea), and harder to find.

15 minutes of fucking-hot flame, striker on the cap... easy to use and strike off while wearing gloves... for about $3? Worth it.

Ironically, I have used a bow drill to start several fires, yet have never actually used a magnesium fire starter to start one.

For me, the best source of tinder and kindling when it is raining is pine trees. When you go to the underside of pine trees, there's always loads of dry and dead sticks, spanning a good range of sizes.
