Make sure you can make a shelter, make sure you can build a fire. After you have the basics under control start to build your skill set. For this you will have to do your own research. Read books, go online, talk to others, but most of all you need to practice. As your skills advance you will be able to better understand you abilities and limitations, but most of all you need to practice. There are old ideas for everything covering making shelter, filtering water, processing wood, making a fire, and so on. But, you need to practice. Learning about camping/survival is a process. You can't be spoon fed ideas and expect them to work the first time every time. You have to take the time to learn for yourself how to do these things. As your skills improve you will find methods and tools that work best for you. BUT, YOU NEED TO PRACTICE.
