Hey /out/, I'm looking to getting to becoming one with the outdoors. I used to have most of the essentials for camping and such, but when I became disconnected with nature for many years, I lost them.

Foam mat, sleeping bag, First Aid Kit, Sewing kit, hat, duct tape, flashlight, firestarting kit, compass and a multitool.

People always think me weird for this, but I always always always bring a toothbrush. I've gotten some of the weirdest looks for brushing my teeth innawoods. I think it would be gross not to.

You only need a backpack, and a sleeping bag/light blanket. Everything else is specifically dependent on where you are going and what time of the year you are going there. If its warm be sure to carry to prevent bugs from bothering you when sleeping. My general rule of thumb is if the weather is below 40F, then bugs shouldn't be a problem at night. If its raining bring a rain jacket. Be sure you can filter water - I prefer bleach...two drops for 32oz. It's mainly a mix of common sense and experience to know what to bring. No one on this board is going to be able to properly answer your question, because it's just way to broad.

My advice is to make a list of what you want to do when outdoors or what your goals are, then think about the gear you will need to bring with you. If you have any specific concerns or worries, then please let us know :)

In truth OP you are only limited buy your pack weight finances and length of stay.

Some items you might look into are a poncho or tarp, and a hat.

- Personal hygiene equipment
- Tools for making a camp and repairing stuff (axe, knife, folding saw, needle and thread etc.)
- Tools for making a fire (a lighter, a lense, waterproof matches etc.)
- Cooking equipment (portable stove or something)
- First aid kit
- Navigation equipment (compass, maps etc.)
- Light sources

Probably missing a lot of stuff, but you get the idea. Take what you *need*.

Add to that, extra shoes/boots and socks. Nothing worse than wet feet. But as others have stated, it really depends on how long you are out for, what terrain and activities you plan on doing, but you have the basics based on this list. Personally, I never go out unless I have a way of cooking food (pan) and boiling water over a fire (rack) for a few days also...but once again, everybody has their own thoughts. I personally don't live on prepack food and love to cook fresh fish and stuff.

Stuff to signal for rescue (you never know)
Stuff to trap and catch your own food - fishing/hunting/trapping
Stuff to prevent/treat infection, basic first aid kit, anti diarrea tabs etc
