Planning a trip to either one of these in a few weeks. I've never been to either one. Any suggestions? What are they like? One better than the other for this time of year?

I'm ~7-8 hour away, and planning a 3-4 day trip with a couple of buddies.

Are you in Mexico or something? Go to Utah or Colorado, being stuck in TX is one thing, actively travelling there to do outdoor activities is just a waste of time.

I'd say there is more to do in Big Bend. Guadalupe Mountain is nice and getting to the top gives you quite a view, but I think Big Bend is prettier. Both are going to be ass meltingly hot this time of year, just as a warning.

Martin Dies Jr State Park is nice. Camping is not really isolated but you can paddle out into the swamps and lose yourself with the gators.

Check out North Padre Island National Seashore, it's the largest protected barrier island in the world and had 70 miles of protected beaches. You need a 4 wheel drive to get out there but it's awesome.

You can make it a good 30-miles or more down (usually) *if* 1) There's not too many drifts - just look...if you notice a bunch, stop or turn around and 2) Some redneck doesn't decide to block the entire stretch between the soft sand and their setup. This time of year bring:

- Surf rod (Academy has a $40 spinning that's decent if you want to go cheap)
- circle hooks
- pack of double rigs with weights
- cast net

If you have a small kayak, use it to run your line out to the clearer water. You'll catch sharks all day.

I spent a few days in Big Bend last June. Even then it was hotter than Satan's ballsack so I can't image August. You'd be much more comfortable in the Fall.
We did a night of camping at Chisos basin which is pretty and has most of the trail heads, then a night at the Rio Grande Village campground and crossed (legally) into Boquillas, Mexico for tacos and tequila. It's a shit town but an adventure. You need a passport

Both are gonna be shit this time of year, with Guadalupe Mountains maybe being slightly less shit.

Guadalupe mountains is also fairly close to Carlsbad Caverns, which is a must see.
