I've read a similar story in the writings of a missionary who went to the Carribeans in the early 18th century. There was a snake killing his chickens, and he wanted him dead. Each time it happened, magpies would fly over the area crying.
One day, magpies came to his window to call him. He grabbed his rifle and followed them to a tree on which the snake had climbed, trying to reach the magpies nest. He shot the snake, and since then, the magpies frequently came to visit him, and deposited little stones on the ledge of his window, perhaps as a form of thanks.
