>get experience as soon as you canAbsolutely true. Talk to your professors, try get volunteering work. Anything like an industry placement/ cadetship/ internship over summer months will pay off in the long run.
My third tip would be don't chase money. You shouldnt be studying to make bank, but studying something because it interests you. If thats the case, you're more likely to take the shitty internships seriously, learn the theory really well, and end up in a job you like.
Science based degrees like Geology are great because if you learn the desktop skills like GIS and are generally good at writing reports/ critical thinking - then you'll always be able to find work as a consultant, even in fields that arent geology.
