I've chopped through roots with both the soviet and the Swede, the Soviet is far superior (provide the quality of the steel is good). The Swede basically just jumps off the root with a horrifying ringing noise.

The NATO tool is better than the Swede, but the joints are quite prone to jam with sand (and thus become a non-folding tool), and the triangular handle likewise inhibits chopping.
