Have any of you encountered bears while out?
We have some black bears here but haven't encountered any.
Is carrying bear spray too paranoid?

No. In all the times I've gone hiking, camping and backpacking in good ol' BC, I've never once seen any trace of a bear and I don't think anyone else on this board has either. Ok I got that out of my system. If you're going alone it's a good idea to carry something to protect yourself with from bears, bearspray probably being your best option. With 1 or more companions you don't have to worry about it.

They always run away from me except once when it was a she bear with cubs who directed them up a tree and stood guard at the base of it.
They are normally running away when I see them, only rarely do I notice them before they've noticed me.

Bear spray is something you'll never ever ever use. However, you also will probably never ever ever use the airbag in your car. It's still nice to have. (Although the chances of using your airbag are infinitely greater than needing bear spray).

Bear spray is just an insurance policy.

I've seen a couple when I was younger walking in the woods with my dad (eastern WA), they just run away. We didn't even shout at them or anything. Once a cow ran one off for us because it had a calf with it and just kept mooing at the bear that was in the water trough.

If you're in grizzly country I'd say spray is a good idea, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Black bears ain't shit. They'll usually run off if you yell mean words at them.

If you come across any other bear, stand your ground, stick out your chest, scream obscenities and act like you own these trees. If it doesn't fuck off, slowly back off while facing the bear. Don't ever run.

If it has cubs, skip the owning the trees part and proceed to the backing off part.

If it charges you you're probably already dead... but fighting a bear would be a pretty bitchin' way to go.

Here I find/see bears quite commonly. Mostly because where I live is heavily bear/cougar country. Within my times hiking I've had 3 bad bear encounters only once have I ever used bear spray. I read an article one time about a guy who was attacked by a bear and what he did to get away was he jammed his arm down the bear's throat and activated it's gag reflex. The bear ran off and he managed to escape in one piece. Although the bear didn't charge at him, he came across a sleeping one and woke it up; the need to charge wasn't there, so idk if that makes a difference

Your 45 is just for your own piece of mind to make you feel better, given an actually aggressive bear, the chances of being able to use it effectively to stop a bear about 84% effective. Doing nothing is 85% effective.

published in The Journal of Wildlife Management, 2014. The same authors have a paper where run the same/ similar analysis for bear spray in 2008 which foound a 90% efficency rate, as opposed to the (somewhat marginally) lower rates for firearms, in particuar "long guns" (76% efficency).

Both methods probably work fine, and if you want to rely on your gun abilities all the more to you. But I think I know which option I would be taking.

This isn't because being in the woods is dangerous, but rather on the off chance that something does happen, you are truly on your own.

That being said, my sister did get chased by a bear once, and a buddy of mine killed one that kept coming into his camp. I've personally never had an issue with them.

I know the sample sizes are different, but the data speaks for itself.

The researchers themselves concluded that people were injured and killed at the same rate weather using a firearm or using nothing at all. Using a firearm, or having a firearm did nothing to change the outcome with an aggressive bear.

Bear spray does change the outcome.

Seen bears a few times. All black and all from a vehicle when I was kid on road trips. Only bear encounter I've ever had was actually just taking my parents dog for a walk in their neighborhood, the thing heard me coming and all I saw of it was it running the other way. After that I always bring spray into the BC but I the closest encounter I've had while /out/ was finding what looked to be pretty old scat.
Just bring it with you. I know it's cliche but it's better to have and not need than to need and not have. Especially with predators. Nice thing with bear spray is you don't even have to use it on the bear. Just mace your friend and high tail it to safety.

Where in BC?
When I lived near Terrace you generally couldn't go a week without seeing one in your backyard or on the side of a road or something, and it was pretty common for them to stand on the other side of a river or lake and look at you while you fish or set up camp.
Pretty spooky, even though generally they aren't interested in bothering you.

Bear hide is THICK, and I've seen .45 literally bounce off, when shot in the bears chest. Go with a .357, it's what people who live in bear country (like me) do.

Bears are a real, serious threat in a lot of the world. Know your area, and be prepared for the animals that are known to live there.

My old neighbor and friend in IL, his grandpa had a cabin in Northern WI and there were lots of black bears around there. When we would go out, we would normally just have something smaller caliber mostly as a noisemaker if the bears weren't scared off by the sight of us.

His grandpa did have one fucked up encounter a few years back though.

There's a lot of black bears up there, last time I was up there for 3 or 4 days, I saw 3 different black bears. I don't think they have ever had to do anything more than making some noise to scare them off.

Most of the time black bears are pretty passive. The bluff charge, but so long as you stand your ground they tend to fuxk off. That said, I don't see anything paranoid about taking bear spray or a gun on hikes.

My Grandfather used to heard cattle in Wyoming or some shit, I don't know the details, but he's always telling me about how a bear will rip my tent open and fuck me to death if it so much as smells a drop of soy sauce on me from five miles away

Brown/Grizzlies on the other hand, those are entirely different. You want to avoid getting close in the first place. If you come up on one, back away slowly (don't run!), don't turn your back but also don't make direct eye contact. Bear spray is the only way to deal with grizzlies so it's pretty much mandatory if you go in grizzly country.
I keep mine on a shoulder strap, some people have belt holsters for it. You need it out and ready to use on a seconds notice

It's probably a regional thing. Not to mention that a small female that weighs 90lbs in the early spring when coming out of hibernation is going to weigh a good deal more than that by the fall when she is ready to go back into hibernation.

Either way, I'm 195lbs, and not fat, and I'd bet that a 100lb black bear is a lot stronger than I am.

I've run into black bears on like 4 occasions while hiking the AT in new jersey and they've just away every time.

I think the only time they do any different is if your at a campground where they get used to approaching campgrounds for food and get less shy around humans.

Ive had three different encounters. Over the course of these encounters, a total of 8 bears Ive laid eyes on; 4 cubs, a yearling and 3 Mommas. all black bears.
The first encounter I was on a dirtbike, but I was like ten so it counts.. Ran out in front of me and got scared as fuck
Second encounter I was at work and A Mom and her year old cub were blocking our only access back to the trucks, no radio. They didnt give a fuck and they ate our lunches. we yelled and threw shit at them but they only ever took a few steps back. shit was real, > pic related

The third time I was going for a run in the evening around 9pm. I was running down the trail and it kind of loops around. I got to the very end of the loop after a slight turn in the road and was heading back home , came to that turn and the bushes absolutely ERUPTED with trees shaking and snapping. sure enough a couple cubs and their mom are beating it thru the woods...that one was scariest because I was alone and had ran RIGHT past them without noticing and I truly believe that the only reason I came out of that one ok was because to the bears it seemed as if I was charging straight at them because of that turn in the road.

I have had 2 bear encounters. Both ended the exact same way.
I lived in upstate NY and would go hiking all the time. One time I can around a bend in a trail and a black bear was chilling in the middle of the trail. We both saw each other and we both panicked. I froze up and the bear ran away. Good size, probably about 250 lbs.
The other bear encounter I saw a mother and cubs about 50 ft up the trail. We both saw each other at the same time and I backed away, they ran away in typical adorable bear fashion.

I know these were black bears and i know brown bears can be more aggressive, but by encounters seem to suggest they want nothing to do with humans except digging through our trash. I like to think of black bears as just bigger and dumber raccoons. That being said, its probably best to avoid them when possible.

Scaring a mom and cub is probably as risky as it gets and they still ran away. they always run away. unless maybe you somehow manage to get between the mom and cub, but that seems very unlikely.

I live deep in bear country in the Rocky Mtns. during the summer they visit my trash can almost nightly. They hang out on my front porch. I have even caught a large boar bear looking through my kitchen window at me.
For the most part they are harmless and run if you shout at them. But not always. They will CHUFF at you and fake charge you if they are angry or really hungry. They tend to be more obstinate (not aggressive) closer to winter. I've had to hit them with firewood to scare them off.
I've also used bear spray.
The bear spray was not very effective and you need to know which way the wind is blowing before you use it.
I have also encountered bears in the forest, but they just ran.

In my experience bears in the woods are much less dangerous than the bear in your trash can.

No, not its not. People who live in bear country will almost always recommend .44 magnum, and people that have been attacked or are just scared of bears will recommend .454 casull or .500s&w.

On a human where you might want a round that transfers kinetic energy into the target right after impact, on a bear (especially if you are shooting head on) you'll want much deeper penetration. So a human oriented round with "stopping power" is the opposite of what you want for a bear.

Nothing smaller than .44mag is suffucient to stop a bear.

That being said, the only bears I've ever encountered that didn't flee for their lives were sows with cubs.

In bear country, hang food where bears can't reach it, always keep a clean camp, and use common sense to avoid feeding areas, such as berry patches, fish bearing (spawning) streams, and, of course, bears.

Never had to shoot one, but know folks that have. Btw, I'm from AK, and grizzlies are the real deal. Black bears are far less dangerous, because they're food for grizzlies, and people too, and they know it.

I was staying at whistler creekside and hiked up to the Olympic rings which isn't very far. there was a bear like q0 feet behind us but he walked off. keep in mind this is up a ski run in August so it's basically a domesticated bear.
