Looking at Baofeng radios but I don't know shit about radios. I know I need a license to transmit. Anyone use ham radios innawoods?

ITs good.
Just make sure to get the one in your pic and not the lighter and "improved" version of it.
Buy some adapters, cables and copper wire with it and build antennas.

Learn to use the scanner option

Learn which frequencys are used (in my country its often 144 mhz to 146) and how to use relays

100km communication everywhere everytime. I find listening to people relaxing during a hike.

All in all a good investment at that pricepoint, even if you dont plan to learn much.

(Bonus points, in citys you can often mess with security, kids and babyphones)

that's what they want you to think...as long as you stick to only the 22 FRS/GMRS bands that all other off the shelf walkie talkies use, and don't try and mess with other operators/police/etc, you should not have any problems

/k/ has a comms general with helpful infographics. Basically the UV-5R is a good choice. Get CHIRP and the cable.

You can get your amateur radio license pretty easily and then use better bands and wattages. Google this. Pepper sites have a good rundown for people who don't want to devote their lives to ham radio for its own sake.

False - the UV-5R does not have a fixed antenna. It's illegal to use AT ALL without a license, however if you're using it on low power, narrow band, and only operating on MURS and FRS frequencies nobody will know about your interchangeable antenna.

You're better off buying a good shortwave receiver with SSB like a Tecsun or Degen or something. Leave the SIGSOP to the lads with decent kit and a reason to be using it.

I made a antenna for PMR446 with 6 mile range. Pretty happy about it. Still need to finish my roll-up slim jim

Also, what datamodes can you use with a Baofeng, apart from CW (morse) obviously. I wanna use RTTY or similar to send encrypted text messages. I'm handy enough to make all the wiring myself.

Too bad there isn't a good app for iOS.

For this you should use PMR or CB radios. These can also be used without a license.
