You'd need to carry around the insulated stove pipe.
Both the vertical-feed rocket stove and the Dakota firehole are old designs, but I've not seem them put together for a camp fire/stove. The trick is to use the insulated pipe so that flew gases burn up and you don't get smoke. that is what a rocket stove does. If the chimney section is not insulated, the surrounding ground would suck away too much heat from the flue gasses and cause smoke. Look up "rocket stove mass heater" those are usually vertical feed like this and look up, "Dakota firehole."
With this you just use longer, thinner fuel, like dead fall. Just don't put too much in and clog the air flow.
