Its a welcome relief when you spend hours shooting.
A 30# isn't bad, but you can get some serious power and distance out of a 70# compound, but your arm gets tired, no matter how good of shape you're in.

just started getting into it myself recently. I promised myself i would borrow or rent until i do it at least 10 more times. i got a bad habit of obsessing over things buying the best stuff and losing interest two weeks later. so far i like recurve a lot more than compound but can absolutely see the utilitarian appeal of compound shooting

anyone else like shooting a little below their "recommended" draw weight?

If you look at the 2 compounds I posted, their limbs are waaayyyy loose. It's more enjoyable just target shooting to not have your body stressed to its full potential. Granted those are extremely low tension right now (was teaching friends 11 year old son) but I haven't felt like tightening them up because lazy shooting is relaxing.

If you're shooting for fun, it makes sense for you to do whatever you enjoy the most. If shooting a 30lb compound is your cup of tea, then shoot a 30lb compound. If shooting a 100lb long bow is what floats your boat, then shoot a 100lb long bow.

I'm out of practice ATM, but I personally enjoy shooting traditional bows more. The downside to that is that if I am going to bow hunt, I either need to buy/borrow a compound, or I need to be out AT LEAST 3 days a week practicing 2-3 months before my hunt.

A lot simpler and more reliable.
Compounds rarely break, but since they have moving parts and bushings/bearings theres always that potential.

I never used sites on a bow when I was younger- it does add a new element. Having mounts for a whisker biscuit/sites changes the whole experience. Sure, yoiu don't need any of that to take down a buffalo, its like iron sights vs a scope on a rifle.
Neither setup is "better", just different. But with a compound you'll be able to get more distance for the same amount of effort.

If I were you I wouldn't go buy a $500 compound, but keep an eye out for a used one on fleabay/clist.
Neighbor found a really nice bear at our local trash collection point, just had a broken string. Some spoiled brat probably got a new one for Christmas and just threw it away.

I know that string length will be your biggest issue tuning it, buy 6 of them +/- your predicted length in 1/2 inch increments is about all the knowledge I have to offer.

I've made a couple of board bows. The first one was a flimsy 35#, and the 2nd one makes my Bear recurve feel like a kid's toy. I haven't put it on a scale yet, but my Bear is 45# @ @28" and 55# @ 32" which is my draw length. I would guess that the 2nd one I made is at 70# or 75# at my draw length. About 50 arrows and I start to feel it. 100 is about my max, and my left shoulder will be dead tired by then.

I think I've got it figured out, and have been looking for a quality stave for a while now. After shooting the board bow, which is longer than the Bear, I have realized that, even at a higher draw weight, the longer bows are much more comfortable for me to shoot. Well I don't know about those types of bows specifically, but I do know for some styles of bow animal glue and sinew would be applied to the back of the bow in a thin layer to give the bow more strength when pulled back. This sort of thing was actually accomplished in other types of bow (English long bow for instance) by using trees (yew) where the heartwood and the outer wood had different structural strength. But again, I'm not too knowledgeable about most bows, so sorry I can't help more

He's talking about a recurve, not a reflex.
That's an awesome bow, but you'd get more usable information from a piano maker than a gunsmith.
A cabinet shop has the machines that you really need.

It's like making a snowboard. You need layers, heat and a mold you can apply pressure to.
In a garage you'd need a shitload of c-clamps, good glue, bucks of water and a heat gun (hair dryer on steroids). Along with building a framework of the final shape to confirm your goodies too.

Traditionalist bows with point shooting is the shit. It carries over from rifle, pistol, shotgun bows etc and it works just fine for anything under 30 yards. More then that if you're not worried about wounding the target aka self defense.

Just like anything in sports, it takes a lot of effort to change habits.
I still think the quick release is a great option- but its like driving on the right side of the road all your life then moving to a country where they drive on the left side.

If it is something that persists long after you are done shooting, and feels less like sore muscles and more like tendinitis, let it rest for a while and take some ibuprofin. Then, either shoot in shorter sessions until your body is used to it, or get a lighter bow to work up to shooting the heavier bow.

If it's just sore muscles, a couple of days of rest should do it.

If you're not going to use a release on a compound, make damned sure it is a compound that is designed for shooting with your fingers. Many modern compounds can easily be derailed if not shot with a release.
