>>844801How I've trained my adopted husky mixes to hang around and be off leash is this. (disclaimer if you aren't a runner this won't be very effective)
1) Run the dog to near exhaustion, or at least to the point they aren't crazy hyper
2) Start taking them off leash in the garage near the door. this way if they go nuts and try to run off you can stop them.
3) start taking the leash off farther and farther back from the door until you are near the edge of the garage.
4) start taking the leash off outside of the garage and gradually take it off farther away from the garage
5) Drop the leash about a block away from the house and keep running as if nothing has happened. gradually push this 2-3-4 blocks away.
6) just take off the leash 1 block away and back it up
This method builds confidence and trust in both the dog and yourself. And it molds a dog who is naturally independent and has an already pre-established behavior how he can use this behavior in a positive way.
Also their prey drive is still strong, so the amount of training that you are going to have to do to suppress that with verbal commands will take a while. Literally working with them everyday to develop that trust. Northern breeds can be super loyal, but you have to earn their trust and respect and not be an asshole. They don't respond to beating them like normal dogs, and will in fact reject you if you do it
