What's the pack in OP pic?

On a side note, I go for small packs and trim the fat. I use a Rush 12, but I would hear arguments for packs that have additional features.

Depends what you get. Warsaw Pact/Soviet stuff is usually okay quality, will last beyond your life. American modern stuff is shit, but they had GOAT stuff back in the 60s and 70s. Brit/German/Finnish stuff is best quality for modern materials and comforts.

Also, if you want to take a daypack with you, there's tons of folding variants available.

...which is a neat thing because you can stash it in some small pocket in your main pack and it weighs next to nothing AND you don't have to lug your huge backpack around the town 24/7 when exploring.

Generally speaking, the main difference between civie and military backpacks is colour (mil comes in camo, neutral tones, civvie in bright colours), military have MOLLE on them and the material is different, civilan packs have diamond ripstop nylon or lower grade cordura like 210-d, military often have 1000-d cordura since it's more durable for abuse

How rarely are people going /out/ that investing an extra $50-100 for comfort is a big deal? The bags last for years and hiking is a pretty cheap activity to begin with.

I agree, but it's ok when you wear it, never had any problems with it. I think the once on TT/Tatonkas are more padded and a little more rigid.

It's basically a Berghaus Vulcan rip off, you can get a real one for ~200euro, which have been a popular pack among German and Swedish (and probably others) elite/SF units.
If you have to depend on your gear I wouldn't chance with a knock off to save a few bucks.

Yea I served 6 years in us army as infantry. Considered getting a good ol ruck sack, but then discovered the osprey/arcteryx bags. Been scouring ebay for one on ebay but theyre still super expensive. I guess that says something about the quality of the bags
