Looks like we're getting spared a hurricane this weekend so more fishing time! I really want to get out one day when the pressure is dropping super low from a storm and see what the bites are like. Could be fun, right?

Depends. If they're in a feeding frenzy I use spoolteks, storms, bucktail jigs or any soft plastic. They seem to love the color white for some reason. When they're a bit more reserved I'll use a live croaker or pilchard.

You don't even have to go to the pier if you hate the crowd. Snook are cruising the shores all over florida right now. Just wade in the shore, bring your bass gear and start casting at dusk. Sometimes they even bite at odd hours in the night.

I have some big Gambler shads that are dark black with some sparkles. Those would probably be good once it starts getting dark.

Maybe I will try and hit some bass a little later this afternoon and stop by the shore when it gets dark. Still not sure. Sucks it's still so warm during the day, I hate waiting around all day Saturday just waiting for the sun to go down a bit.

Spinners aren't the best for mid-day summer fishing. Break out the Black Fury when it starts to get dark if you want bass. Otherwise once the water cools off, run them all day.

They are in basically every body of water, they hit large baits, they will eat anything, and it is fun to catch 3lb+ fish in small lakes.

There are plenty of other big predators, but most of them aren't nearly as common or easy to catch as bass. And if you want something that gets 5lbs+ that you can catch anywhere, you end up with carp and catfish that you can't really target with lures.

Any tips to detecting bites? I was fishing this morning and caught 3-4 fish but I didn't feel any of the bites. I just seen my line looked like it was going out faster than it should have been. I also set the hook about 6 other times when nothing was there because I thought it looked like the line was going again. I probably looked like a spaz that thought he was getting a bite on every other cast.

That's not bad. I have tons of overfished small lakes nearby so I will stop by there after work for an hour and pull out a bunch of ~12" fish. But once the water cools off in the fall, the bigger guys will come closer to shore and be more active hunters (especially at dawn and dusk) and 3lb+ fish are a lot more common.

I was just texting Miami anon and she has to work late today but wants to go do salt sometime. I said we could go late since the pier is open 24hrs on weekends but of course she has other shit to do and is tired. I promptly reminded her that fishing takes priority over school work and personal hygiene.

I'm about to head to a lake soon so I will probably be tired and want to sleep by the time I get home from that.

They are top tier predators of bait fish. They hunt down and eat whole, a wide range of other fish. Basically, anything they can get their mouth around and then some. They are some of the easiest fish to clean, have thick fillets, and have the best flavor imho.

Bigger sit-down restaurants normally won't have much for freshwater unless it's salmon or some fancy shit. But if you got a JJ's Fish & Chicken or most bar food type places with a fish fry, they will always have catfish.

It was a weightless senko on a baitcaster with braid. The bass were hitting it on the initial fall after casting but I didn't feel them hit it. I just seen my line going faster than I thought it should have been.

Lets say I set the hook 10 times. 3-4 were actual bites where I caught a fish. The other 6 nothing was there just my mind playing tricks on me.

I've been looking around and some people say palm the reel and touch the line but maybe my hands are small but that feels awkward to me and doesn't feel like a correct "fishing position". I even have a pretty low profile reel. (Lews Speed Spool Tournament MB).

He's too scared to go to the pier 5 minutes away from his house. What makes you think he'd come here?

I've been to many piers all over Florida but the Juno pier is literally the most active fishing spot I've ever been to. I go there almost every weekend and I've only been skunked a handful of times.

Finally went up to my grandpas pond. The results where good and bad. Good thing was I confirmed a massive population of bullhead. The bad news is they were all under 7" and we didn't any other species. Me and my buddy are trying to figure out the logistics of getting bass and gills in there.

Yeah, when you are getting bites on the drop as opposed to the retrieve, they will always be harder to feel because there is not instant pressure in the same way. With enough practice you will tell the difference just fine.

I always palm the memecasters and will often hold the line between my thumb and index finger to make sure it spools good. But that still won't make it easy to tell when you are getting bites right as it drops. I think easiest way to tell when that happens is just to watch your line. If it starts going under much faster than usual, something probably grabbed it so give it a little set.

As soon as he was on, I knew I was going to lose the bass. It was a Texas rigged brush hog and the bass hit it right before the drop off. So I thought the pressure was probably just the bait coming up the rocky dropoff and didn't want to try and set the hook and lodge it in the rocks. So I gave it a little jerk and it ended up being a half-assed hook set in a decent bass. Those fucking manmade lakes with clear water are so frustrating.

Each line size behaves a different way, especially for mono. Since mono floats, a smaller diameter line allows you to get your bait deeper (and vice versa). Lighter line is also a must for small, clear streams. I backpack in the Ozarks and I've never gotten a bite using anything larger than 6#.

And for using live sunfish as bait, I pefer to hook them through the back. Maybe 1/4"-1/2" below their dorsal fin. I haven't rigged a live bluegill in years and years but that's how I do shiners. Don't leave the tiny hoon you caught it on in its mouth. You will have a hard time hooking big bass or cats with that tiny hook. Get some 4/0 circle hooks or whatever size looks good for the target fish.

Have it spooled with suffix tritanium #17 high vis, then buy a spool of #50 mono or flouro
Then also get a spool of #30 mono and #20 mono

Put about 20 feet of #50 mono on there as a shock leader with an improved bloodknot. OR Albright knot (easy enough to find instructions for either online)

I say sort of bent because it didn't really bend hard, its a two piece rod and the second piece/tip piece twisted and bent to the left a little and just fucking snapped

Also depends on the spot. One of my lakes had a steep rocky dropoff and anything will get hung up if I try and pull it up the side so I will start reeling faster when I come up to it.

Largemouth are fine, but the fight is just inconsistent. Maybe 40% of largemouth I catch put up a good fight. Another 40% are lazy until I get them close to shore and then they take off and run. Then like 20% of them are just lazy as shit and a big bluegill or crappie have the size would have been more of a challenge.

The Perfect Plastics are a little more expensive than Zooms, but I'm a big fan. Only problem is most stores don't carry 1000 colors like Zoom baits.

But there's a few reasons I prefer those KVD shads to Zooms and lots of others. The paddle tail is GOAT, they use a slightly harder plastic thay seems to work really well for these baits, they are a little smaller than the Zoom Super Flukes but larger than the Jr's and it is perfect for bass, the slots for the hooks are perfect and it stays weedless in the worst conditions but setting hookd is still easy, and the scent they use actually smells kind of good.

I have done much better with the KVD ones than any of the Zooms. I like the Gambler ones too if I'm fishing somewhere that I want a slightly larger bait. They have a long tail with good action and they also have a few great color combos.

Perhaps they are just protecting a nest and don't normally ever go after lures. That'd explain why you never see males.

The largest one I have gotten was actually chasing around baitfish in really shallow water. Ended up throwing a limetruese trick worm near him and he it it really hard. Then yesterday, I saw a group of 3 probably 15"-18" peacocks cruising around in the shallows right by shore. Tried a couple soft baits and they had no interest. So I threw out a tiny Mini Mite to see if maybe they would swallow that and that's when I got that tiny guy.

Part of the problem is the lakes I go to that I know have peacocks are those manmade lakes I'm always bitching about. They are all the same with super clear water and they have a shelf that is ~2' deep and then a straight rocky dropoff 5' or 10' from shore and then I have no idea what happens from there. It's hard to find vegetation aside from some weeds right by shore in that really shallow area before the dropoff and larger bass rarely come up there.

I did find one spot past the dropoff last night that seems to have some weeds so I will probably fish that area next time I go. That's where I hooked the largemouth. But aside from that, these lakes have unnatural terrain and I'm not sure where the fish really like to hang out.

the biggest downside is that it's not self draining, but for calm waters, which is what i would use it for, it seems like it would work well.

I was trying to scope some other spots. If I come from the beach maybe 1/2mi south, I can walk up onto the jetties but the water was pretty rough today and there were spotty rain clouds so I didn't feel like gettjng stuck that far from the car in a downpour or getting washed away. I was over by the beach anyway today so I stopped by the inlet park for half an hour. I'm going to have get out there at like 4:30am and stake a spot on the jetty when the tide movement is right. But I know I will get pissed when 7am comes and I have a bunch of minorities come post up 20ft down from me. When I'm fishing my freshwater lakes, I don't like people on the same shoreline.

Confirmed for never saltwater fishing ever. I get jacks withing 3-5 casts of a spoon. Saltwater fish are far more active and ferocious than lazy bass.

I might get out to the beach near my house. The north end closer to the pier is normally kinda busy, but a little further south it is more quiet. And if I walk further down, I will just be in front of $5mil houses and there shouldn't be people around. I should try and do it at like 4am.

Is the water still warm? I'm waiting for spinnerbaits to start working again over here. It's fucked up because I can sometimes see the baitfish running from bass at dawn and dusk when they are feeding in the shallows but they will still rather hit a Texas rigged brush hog near the bait fish instead of a spinner or crank.

Also spinners aren't always the best for clear water. Or at least if it is sunny, try and avoid bright silver blades if possible. Somebody needs to start making brushed nickel and brass bladed spinners so they don't flash quite so much. Mepps started making those pink and firetiger paints where they are still reflective but not so bright and flashy and that pink one has caught a lot of fish.

Put a gold kastmaster on your line and walk along the beach casting, especially where you see birds or bait around
You'll get ladyfish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, Jack's, etc

Just get there and fish from the Sun is barely lighting anything to 7:30-8 am on the beach
No one will be around, aside from a few weirdos jogging or walking

I've not fished in Florida in about 10 years and never from the surf, so I can't say what goes on there, but in the obx of nc the blues are out by the end of the pier 9 times out of 10 in the afternoon, but usually right at dawn they're near enough to shore to get with bass gear

On a lot of species of catfish there is a small area of yellow meat near the top of the back close to the head. The only problem with carp and the intramuscular bones. Their flavor is quite fine. And, yes Oscar are perfectly edible and pretty good. They are in the cichlid family which are for the most part good eating fish when of proper size (personally I like fillets [deep fried anything I love]). You may like this video. They look delicious,

I bought one of these about a month or two ago and it is amazing. I never realized how big of a difference it would make. I was using a cheap walmart "Starter" exercise shirt before.

This also applies to Darn Tough socks. The lake I fish has hiking trails all around it. They make a huge difference compared to white cotton socks.

I have 2 outfits that I wear now. Both sprayed down with permethrin because fuck ticks.

Maybe go in to a tackle shop and see if they'll let you test a few reels?
Clip the weight you'll be using most with it to the end then put on a few different reels and see what you like

ive used a few of them before. not as good as the bronze eye. they weigh a little more so you can cast it farther, it has a better walk the dog and hook up ratio imo

I'm content with the performance of my 6 dollar frog, I don't think a 10 dollar frog would be used by me. I mean I can buy a great frog and a spinnerbait, or a bag of worms, or a jig, or some other bs for that price
