Hello /out/
I'm plannning a week long road trip up to Scotland in a few weeks, but I've never been to this stunning country before.
Any good reccommendations on things to do, places to see and places to stay?
There will be two of us, in a jeep fully loaded with camping gear and supplies. we are both experienced campers and I am an outdoor instructor, so we can take a bit of a challenge!

Avoid Glasgow. Edinburgh is boring now since fringe is over with and all the foreigners and students have fucked off. Scotland's not a hard place to camp, even in the highlands, especially if you're as experienced as you are. Aberdeen is nice, I'd recommend going there for a day, great food. Sorry I can't speak much for hiking routes or campsites, I've never done it up in Scotland. Whereabouts are you from, OP? Your experience with the natives will vary wildly depending on where you're from.

We're both Welsh.
we were hoping to avoid most of the touristy type places and cities. Basically, we want to see some cool shit. Heard the Iisle of Skye is supposed to be pretty damn good.

My girlfriend and I just walked about 450km of the Scottish National Trail this summer. That was of course hiking, but still I'd say get up north, north of The Great Gap. A lot of people we met who where driving in Scotland recommended driving along the west coast, visiting isles and villages - particulary one named "Applecross". They also talked about Sandwood Bay, close to Cape Wrath (the most north-western tip of mainland Scotland.
My own best experience was walking a specific part of the route, I think it might have been on some trail named "the Affric Kintail Way". It was absolutely stunning and it eventually led us to the "Falls of Glomach" which I would also recommend visiting - following the quite dangerous path, leading down from the fall into the valley was quite an experience as well

they have weather forecasts for midges. enjoy them crawling all over you and biting, unless you go later on in the year. around this time of year id stick to the Borders, its nice and theres not too many midges there. also, dont wear shorts, there are ticks everywhere.

It's not so much a north south thing as a east west thing. I was up in Tay forest the other week (NE) and the midgies were mild. Went out the week before to near Arrochar and they were shocking.

well, the rough plan so far is:
1. go up through the lake district and up into scotland along the western side.
2.wild camping in Galloway forrest park for the night.
3. head through perth and up to loch ness, passing by loch lochy...because, nessy.
4. then over to fort william
5. a short stay at applecross
6. explore the isle of skye
7. back home

does /out/ know any cool places to stop along the way?

if you're going through glen coe, which you should be, take the road up glen etive. It's an 8 mile single track dead end, which finishes at loch etive. Good place to camp for a night.
Make sure you take the Bealach na Ba/Pass of the cattle to or from applecross.
Also, take the old turntable ferry to skye, not the bridge.

Honestly if it were me, i wouldn't even bother with loch ness. Other than the bullshit sea monster story and it's depth, neither of which make it a worthwhile visit, it is nothing remarkable. There are much more beautiful spots you can go with your time.
I'd say after you've left galloway head to gourock and get the ferry to dunoon, take a815 north, stopping at the benmore botanical gardens (the best botanical gardens in the uk, imo), take the a815 up to cairndow and then take the a83 back to loch lomond, this will take you over the 'rest and be thankful'. Once at loch lomond just head north on the a82 and then a85. Or you could do this on your return journey.
Don't be afraid to explore random single tracks.

i did a 2 week roadtrip around scotland. rented a car, left glasgow and did a clockwise trip around scotland. stayed at b&bs for the most part. camped out some. didnt have any plans. just winged it. i wanted to see castles so those were frequent targets. distilleries too ofc.

those switchbacks had me sweating bullets. a section of the road collapsed one time. i wouldnt worry about it though Opie. it was worth it though. applecross is fantastic.

skye is another good spot. found some ancient cave thing in the middle of a field along the road we were driving. sheep stared at me. crawled around. kinda cool. also stopped at a jeweler/smith place. had some nice things there.

scotland is just a beautiful country. would love to go back sometime.

aye it's sketchy.
try doing it on a motorbike, in pissing rain and gale force winds, trying to squeeze past the fucking german tourists in their caravans who don't understand the etiquette of single track roads. You feel like you've reached rivendale when you pull into applecross. Right into Applecross inn for a well deserved venison pie and a pint of ale.

Lots of people and bikers come here just to drive around and see the place and see all the crazy wee villages like Marvig, Orinsay and North Tolsta,

See what are pretty much the last wilderness places in the United Kingdom and Europe, many people still lead traditional lives cutting the peats and crofting.

Some highlights:
Beaches around Luskentrye, they go on forever area also home to worlds most scenic golf course, as rated by golfers

St Clement's Church, the burial house for the medieval chiefs of the clan Macleod (lots of Tempalar imagery)

Callanish stones, giant Celtic / white pride cross which makes Stone hendge look like the tacky tourist trap it is.

The Tolsta bridge to now where, an extremely bizarre bridge were I hang out there and scare the tourists. If to see me ask tell me your from /out/ and I'll tell you the local prophesy. Cannot guarantee my presence.

Edinburgh is the same only the people there are massvie cunts who give you lots of hassle.

I've been here 7 years. I've never been robbed. Never been in trouble. Had the best time of my life. Met great people. Glasgow is one of the best places to be a young person in the UK. Please stop with the tired old stereotypes from the 1970s they really don't hold water outside of the rough schemes on the outskirts. If you head into the west end or Finnieston I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

All if the things I listed were thing I witnessed or experienced while living in Glasgow town, there is more including trannies, people being visibly drunk by lunchtime and the general empty materialism of life there with the dead eyed freaks who enjoyed the aforementioned materialism.

I hope to never live in a city again, these are not the places for living human beings. If you enjoy it and have lived there a long time I'm not sure what you are.

i did this a few years back in a volvo estate with the gf, sleeping in the back half the time, and camp sites or b&b's the other half.

western side all awesome.
hebrides we didn't like at all.
glen coe yep.
applecross yep (the road was great fun)
eveything higlands was awesome.
plan to not plan too much, just go wherever he hell you fancy.
skye was nice enough but more crowded than other places.
make sure you get some ferries, the smaller the better (if you're ging to skye get the glenelg ferry one way just for the fun of it)
campnig spots for car sleep were easy to find.
make a point of driving the long way round a couple times, the driving was half the fun on that trip and the tiny little roads were fantasic.

my keyboard is a little fucked hence the spellnig.
