Im a catch and release bass guy, I want to occasionally start keeping some of the lunkers I catch I want to know the most humane way on killing a fish with the least amount of pain and suffering. I have found tons of videos and articles on how to skin and filet a fish but not so much on the whole what to do with a live fish before hand.
>tldr how to kill a keeper fish fast and painless.

Baits/presentation matter to an extent, but I've caught 8 and 10 lb bass on small Rattletraps or Roostertails.

That is because those are minnow lures that are intended to attract large predators whose main prey are minnows. I use roostertails exclusively for smallmouth bass. The main trouble with those is that you get smaller fish too.

If you want small fish, you'll need to use other lures. I prefer using live worms on 1/4-1/2 inch long wire hooks without sinkers or bobbers. I'm not sure of the proper hook size though. With that I catch tons of smaller fish and the large ones usually never pay any attention. However, I've had the largest bass I've ever seen completely swallow the smaller fish I'd just hooked and was reeling in. I couldn't set the hook since the hook was inside the other fish. When I tried, it would just pull out of the big fish. It repeated that 3 times before leaving. lol

This isn't a best bait for X fish. I'm simply commenting that utilizing small spinnerbaits on known beds/areas for smaller fish (crappie and brim, primarily) will often hook the rogue big fish.

Apprantly something about the fish panics which causes increased blood flow which gives the meat a better taste? Can't confirm this just what i've heard

I guess I've never eaten it so, I shouldn't automatically judge it. I'm just used to all the sport fishermen up here lumping them together with other rough fish. People bowfish for them just like carp, then just bury them in their gardens, use them on traplines, or just throw them on the bank to rot.

Bass and Gar are great eating fish. One thing though:

Gut them immediately after catching if you plan on eating them. This will affect the taste of the meat more than anything else you do. This is true of every fish, but especially true of some (bass, gar, jacks, bluefish, etc.) It will also help your catch keep longer.

Literally every person I've ever seen that's told me that XYZ fish is a trash fish will just toss their catch in the cooler guts and all, then fillet it 8 hours later and complain that it tastes fishy. Hell, the meat on some fish will even get discolored if you don't gut them right away which you think would be an indicator to people.

I try to keep my catch alive on a stringer while I continue to fish. Aside from the gutting, tho, just bleeding them while still alive adds to the quality of the meat, too.

Fish is very different from red meat. Bleeding out a fish before filleting draws the blood out of the fillet, which makes it firmer and prevents the flesh from souring faster

I am not entirely familiar with bass, but if they work the same as the cod I've fished, you'll want to cut it across the gills - Lifting up the gill cover, almost cutting the head off. This will lead to it pumping its blood the fuck out. When it's done bleeding, remove the rest of the head. Then proceed to skin it and filet it.

Please excuse me if I'm not 100 % correct, but what I know comes from practical experience of fishing with a pro, and I'm not 100 % sure of how the anatomy of a bass compares to that of a cod, nor how well what I know translates into English.

OP here well I haven't been to this thread since I created it, I appreciate all the input and advice. I live in Massachusetts and from what I have been hearing here bass isn't the greatest tasting fish eh? I honestly have never had one. Fishing season just started at Quabbin reservoir "the res that supplies Boston" and when I do start keeping fish it will probably be a salmon or trout out of there. Thanks for the responses again!
