Who's prepping for fly fishing this fall? Just made these over the weekend.making some hare's ears next.

I need to work fast, spent too much time tying a full box of nymphs and leech patterns for my uncle.

Also just bought a new 8'6" 5 wt. 4 piece so I can put it in a backpack.

Planning to do a few overnight stays in NH, VT, western Mass and maybe upstate NY where my uncle lives.

Is it a spinning reel? Because the number or type of bearings in a spinning reel won't affect casting at all, just the retrieve.

Anyway when you're getting into saltwater stuff, you are probably better off looking at the type of bearings rather than number. There are all sorts of shielded and sealed bearings that will keep the water out better. And then there are ceramic bearings when you start spending some money.

There is a price point with reels where once you start going higher and higher, you are paying for exotic materials or a "Made In" stamp. You don't have to spend a lot on a spinning reel to get something that will work well and last for years, especially for freshwater. There are a lot of good $30-$50 spinning reels. You might want to spend a little more if you will be dunking it in saltwater a lot though and hooking fish that will run out the drag for 20min.

But basically you can spend $100 on a reel or $200 on a spinning reel from the same company, and there's a good chance they will both be just as smooth and have the same internals but the $200 reel will have some carbon composite frame and carbon fiber whatever that will weight a couple ounces less. If you are going to be casting all day, the lighter one will be nice but it's hard to justify spending twice the money.

I didn't look too deeply at specs because $50ish is a fews seasons exendable backup for me and all reels in that price point will be about the same.

Try holding it 1st if you haven't. Weght is one thing that can make a decent reel crappy. I love my spinfisher 6500 but it's just too damned heavy for everyday on a 7' rod. Dropped to a 4500 and I'm in love with life again. Moved the 6500 to a 10 ft rod and the balance is much better.

My father is probably going to start fishing again so I'll just have one, but the brake is pretty fucked up, the guide line too, I'm just considering getting a new couple.

He's old fashioned, never touched a computer and just said "Go Daiwa, I had a couple of them and they were awesome".

Idk about Suffix prices, but PowerPro is normally $32-$34 for a 300yd spool at Cabela's and Bass Pro. I try to buy from Dick's though, they have the best price at $28 for 300yds. I stocked up when Dick's had a buy one get one half off awhile back since it's not like I'm not going to use it eventually. Gotta jump on the good deals when you see it.

I was actually running this Booyah Pond Magic in chartruese and black with one of those saltwater Gulp chartruese mullets as a trailer early in the spring and got a few nice bass on them. The little pond down the street from my house where I get tons of 12" largemouth, I was getting some ~3lb fish out of there. And had one that had to be 5lbs on the thing but spit it out a couple feet away from landing him.

Sometimes these white/silver/gold ones hit pretty well too but I do run inlines more. When the water is cooler though spinnerbaits can do work right as the sun is going down and they are fun to fish.

I was looking for a good black something topwater when I was at Dick's last weekend but those Yamamoto ones I had my eye on are gone. Only dark one was a cheaper Strike King Banshee popper. I think I need to stop by Bass Pro and see what they have over there for the night time. And I want to get a couple casts with the two silver/clear ones on the left of the pic. The one on top is a Yo-Zuri 3DB and I got that at the beginning of summer and the action is incredible but I haven't had much of a chance to use it sucessfully.

It depends on the type of catfish. Flatheads favor live bait, so I usually take some worms and black perch. You can use anything though as long as it's alive: bluegill, baby carp, goldfish, bullhead, dink size crappie. It's important to take at least two different types of bait to increase your chances of success. Be sure to check your local regulations regarding bait.

Blue and channel catfish eat anything that they can smell. This includes live bait, but you can always do very well with cut bait such as carp, shad, bluegill, etc. Stink bait can be productive at times. So can liver: chicken, turkey, beef, and beaver (my favorite). Don't overlook insects, both larval and adult. Grubs, grasshoppers, hellgrimites, and catalpa worms have all been used to take home channels. Again, the larger variety of bait equals higher success because you can more quickly determine what the catfish are in the mood for at the time.

Hook type is all about preference. Regular J-hooks require you to set the hook. Kahle hooks pretty much set themselves, but it doesn't hurt to set the hook if you like. Circle hooks cannot have any manual hookset. This results in a lost fish. Simply let the fish run and the hook sets itself. This poses problems if a fish takes the bait and swims toward the angler, creating slack in the line.

Ultimately, what you use is determined by the conditions you are fishing in. As you gain experience and build up a fair repertoire of tackle, you'll be able to know what will work best.

I've tried every way imaginable and none are any easier than others.

As for Dicks, I would doubt it. Even if they do, I wouldn't trust them to do it. The few that I've been to have generic employees who know the bare minimum to do their job. Search YouTube for how to spool new line on your reel if you've never done it before. It's very simple.

No gators in those, that has to be completely salt. A little further north there is a big canal that runs west and I have fished that one maybe 15mi inland and gotten largemouth and seen gators. These are little canals where you can have your boat on the ocean within a few minutes.

Yeah. They might be similar in diameter but braid creates more friction sliding out and it's more lightweight meaning that it stays in the air longer. It should still be decent to cast if you get quality braid and have a good rod.

Siwash hook would probably be less work and you can buy open eye to be able to switch out hooks easily. One problem with baitholder for lure is that the eye is too small for a split ring and you can't out it on a welded ring so you have to work around that

It has more to do with UV than washing off. So, if you keep your spools covered with something that stops all light, the color will last FAR longer than without. Some aluminum foil works perfect for that.

Almost landed one on my bass rod (read calico bass). That rod has balls man, I could have landed it had it not been for the mess of a tangle I got into. 6 people with half hooked on a fish. Kinda hard to go tuna fishing with 55 people on the boat and only 4 deck hands.

Late January and February seems to be the only time I can consistently get bass on crankbaits and spinners etc.

I want to buy a boat. I live in Williamsburg, VA and will mostly be catfishing in the James and Chickahominy, and possibly the Potomac, York, etc. but rarely.

Should I be looking for a fiberglass or aluminum boat? I'm thinking of getting a center console for speed to travel the rivers, but I've always loved pontoon boats for catfishing because of all the space.

Plenty of girls say they're into fishing but that just means they went a couple times while vacationing as part of an activity with friends and/or family

I have never met a girl who fishes on a near daily basis like most of the regulars in this general

But if you're brand new, make sure that is what you actually want and will use it. If you end up fishing freshwater rivers, 3 surf combos will be useless.

I have a chance to get a used St Croix 8/9 wt rod for cheap.

Any ideas for a salt reel that wont break the bank. I did a little looking and Okuma SLV came up which is like 50ish but not really a salt reel. Should I care? Do I really need to spend #2-300 and then another 80 for line?

Any reel is a salt reel if you take care of it
Rinse it in fresh clean water after every trip, and every 3-4 months open it up and do a quick detailing, then once a year open it up for a deep clean

I prefer an exact weight because I know what its made for and can go up or down a weight depending on situation (let's say I'm fishing an 8 weight rod in a small Creek, I'd probably use 9 weight double taper line to cast heavy flies better in tighter spaces, of if I'm in wide open bays and need to cover water I might use a 7wf line to cast farther and cover more water

there's a lake near my new place stocked with brookies by the fisheries ministry, all my shit is for bass. guy at a tackle shop told me to try lighter mono line opposed to the heavier braid i have on to punch through all the vegetation im used to and to use really small mepps spinners.

been trying to find decent bass spots here but seems impossible without a boat (most of the lakes are accessed by boating through rivers, but the brook stocked one has two shorefishing spots)

Steel wool will knock the rust off.. And you can melt down some wax and give the hooks a quick dip. Hit em with a heatgun after dipping to get off any excess. Wont stop the fish from biting but will slow any rust.

That's like when I had what I assume was a huge snek a couple months back. Except I was fighting for closer to 2min until he wrapped me up. By far the biggest thing I have ever hooked, or at least the strongest. My heart was racing for the next 15min. I have never had anything run out 30yds of line in a couple seconds right after I set the hook.

Yeah, it's a great feeling.
I think I might keep my drag too low as a rule and it may be costing me hook sets. I keep it so when I jerk a lure it peels just the smallest amount of drag from water resistance.

Also picked up that St Croix fly rod. 8/9 wt. 9'
great condition, great price. If I don't use it I can flip it easily for what I paid. Now just need a reel, and backing, and line, and time to play with it Gonna wait for the winter and learn to toss line then.

I keep my drag fairly low too (considering it is 15lb braid) just so I can have a little fun. But it's also kinda set so a feisty ~3lb bass is about where they can start pulling. With that giant snek, I might have been able to keep him from getting the line tied up on whatever if I tightened it up right away but no way he still wouldn't pull line out if I had the drag tight just to the breaking point of the line.

Also you can buy pre made leaders and tippits but I'd look into tying your own
You'll tie a lot of knots in them while you're learning and is cheaper to make your own and toss it once you've buggered it

And if you can only know three new knots, know the nail knot, the improved bloodknot, and the perfection loop
