Yeah most people who could learn to drive could also learn to fly a small plane. People just think its out of their reach, well mainly because it does cost money. But you're correct, it's illegal to accept pay for flying unless you have a commercial license, at least here (Canada).

I logged about 20 hours instructional and something like 0.3 solo before I stopped. That was a long ass time ago and if I started again I'd basically be starting from scratch because I can't remember anything.

I just flew a tail dragger for the first time last weekend OP. fucking overpowered thing took off in like 100ft. Coulda done it in 25.
