Frogmorton Cellar is my go to for now, but when I smoke in a tall and narrow pipe I grab R.O Blends Fire Storm. Both blends are amazing for morning/evening smokes or even all day depending on the smoker.

This is what I have for my cellar as of now, not including my own blends. I have a shipment of Virginia and VaPer blends coming to add to the cellar since those arguably age the best

I just started a month or two back. I found I really enjoyed dunhill's Elizabethan so when I started running low I ordered some nightcap to give it a shot since they are fairly similar blends, on paper at least. But man, nightcap just totally does not appeal to me now. While Elizabethan was fairly tame and raisiny sweet, nightcap was almost like smoking ladies purfume mixed with vinegar. A little dissapointing because a tin of tobacco is nearly ten bucks and if you don't like it you've just wasted money and you just have to try again. Nevertheless, I thought I might just try some orlik next since it seems like it is pretty plain-jane virginia tobacco. But being straight virginia can anyone say whether it bites much? Also any recommendations for something similar to elizabethan for me to try would be much appreciated.

Anyone care to redpill me on choosing a pipe ?

I used to smoke cigarettes (still do sometimes) and just over the past two years got into cigars.

But truth be told I don't know dick about pipes and pipe tobacco. Do I inhale it or draw and puff like cigars ? Are there pipe memes I should stay away from like super long pipes or alcohol infused tobaccos ?

I enjoy a cigar now and then, mainly Montecristo no. 1 and 2, but Romeo y Julieta works fine too, I guess. My brother gave me a few Gurkha cigars which I couldn't really appreciate, and I got a nice sample pack of non-Cuban cigars when I bought a humidor earlier, really eager to try them out.

Dagner pipes are your meme tier pipes; just about any pipe priced at or under $50 will smoke perfectly fine

Missouri Meerschaum has plenty of affordable Corn cob pipes, you buy these type with the understanding that they ~should not last for years/decades/generations

If you were to look at Briar pipes you can expect them to last longer if taken care of properly, but it is definitely worth mentioning that Corn Cob pipes act like Meerschaum pipes and they absorb moisture/tar which helps GREATLY with having a good smoke especially if you are new to smoking pipe tobacco

Patience, Patience, Patience, Do not constantly hit a pipe like a cigarette or you will cause issues like burning out your bowl/tongue bite/tasting bland smoke

For some of my favorite blends/brands, I would say my go-to staple pipe tobacco would be Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture, but as a Chicago native, Spilman's Mixture from Iwan Ries' E. Hoffman Co. is one of my all-time favorites. (Not related to out, but if you are in Chicago and are looking for cigars or pipe tobacco, Iwan Ries in the loop and Up Down Cigar in Old Town are very nice. Iwan Ries is the oldest Tobacconist in the US, fun fact). If you ever get your hands on some Spilman's Mixture, I highly recommend it (it is pretty widely available, and you can order it online, too.)

I'm a newfag to pipe smoking but I've got a Mississippi Meerschaum corn cob and a Casillero Rustic Egg. For tobacco I have a tin of Dunhill Nightcap, a tin of East India Trading Company Royal Challenge, and a tin of Ole Shenandoah Barrel No. 76.

I've been smoking the two aromatics in my corn cob and using the rustic egg for my english blend. I've gotten good enough at packing the tobacco and pacing my smoking to the point where I don't have to relight very often at all.

If you want to and can afford to why not, not necessary but it helps with resting (which I'm sure someone will argue, but for wood pipes it does help)

Always depends on the smoker, you average 3g per bowl and obviously that varies but with 50g in a proper tin you get roughly 20 bowls give or take

A stand is not necessary but why you see pipes sitting upright is also to help with the resting, so they can breathe. A humidor would not be a wise location for used pipes depending on how airtight and what humidity % it is inside, you would be better off sitting them upright in the opened humidor or elsewhere. I have found that my fishing pliers work well to hold my bent Peterson, be resourceful there is no need to buy more unless you want more

It's more of a box. Like pic related minus the humidifier on top. Usually used as a "here's babbies first cigar sampler" humidor which is where I got mine. It uses a little removable strip humidifier that I don't have in it.

I can just leave it open and stand my pipes up though, that's no big deal.

That the point. That anon was being sarcastic as to what contributed to Chapman's cancer (he died at 48 by the way). The guy was known for being a raging alcoholic for most of his life in addition to smoking a pipe. Considering that tonsil cancer (what he had, no throat cancer) is much more strongly linked to alcohol use than smoking, it's not unreasonable to assume that has massive drinking habit was a likelier cause.

I'm not much of a smoking advocate (I don't smoke at all, actually, but am thinking about limited pipe use), but pipe smoking is well-regarded in medicine as the safest way to consume tobacco. Its carries some health risks, but at a much lower scale than cigarettes or even cigars. Graham Chapman's death was sad, but unless someone carries a 30+ year heavy drinking habit while also smoking constantly, they're not really at the same risk level.

As many times as required, usually it only takes the false light then 1-3 matches/relights throughout the rest of the bowl

I could do 1 light for a whole bowl, but I like to let the pipe sit for 2-5 minutes in between puffs too often for that to work

Take as long as you want between puffs and do not feel any which way about how many relights unless you are in a competition for no relight

Resting is usually referring to at least 24 hour idle after use; I am sure 12-24 hours would be sufficient but I often give pipes 1-2 days in between if not even 1-2 weeks

You likely do not have to worry about resting if you smoke twice a week since that is already allowing enough time

Incidentally, this will help your Nightcap taste better too.
As far as that particular Virginia I can't say-I've never tried Orlik. But they are a very reputable brand and they DO produce the Dunhill tobaccos now too, so they must know what they're doing.

As for matches to Elizabethan, it's a legendary Virginia/perique blend, but it's still a Va/Per. There are all sorts of Va/Pers to be had on the market-Sutliff even makes an Elizabethan Match blend.
Not sure how it compares since I haven't had either, but it's there, and it's available.

Start with something cheap yet good smoking, so you have a good shot at enjoying yourself but if you decide it's not for you, you're not out $100 or more. Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipes are awesome starter pipes, as they draw really nice, aren't expensive at $7, smoke very true, don't require an ash cake like briars and naturally smoke cool thanks to the properties of corncobs. That makes them almost ideal starter pipes, and they're available at most drugstores nationwide.
As for smoking them, you don't inhale, but puff, and MUCH lighter than you do with cigars. You want to keep the pipe just this side of going out for the best flavor
Tobacco selection is up to you, but they all fall into two big groups-aromatic and non-aromatic blends. As it sounds like, the aromatics have other flavorings like cherry, vanilla or whiskey adds, while the non-aromatics offer you the subtleties of the many different varieties of tobacco. Each has its merits and there are both superstar blends of each kind as well as blends that straddle the fence between them.
If you're used to cigarettes and want a good tobacco-tasting pipe tobacco, try Carter Hall. It's an American OTC, so it's easy to find, easy to light, affordable, pretty forgiving of newbie mistakes and has a straight tobacco flavor that's quite good. For a flavored blend, Captain Black in the white pouch is a decent vanilla-flavored blend that is also highly available and affordable.
Speaking of newbie mistakes, you will make them. That's okay, everybody else did too when they first started. It takes a while to get the hang of filling your pipe just right. You need to learn how a well-filled bowl feels to your fingers and draws through the stem, so test them both out before you light. As a pilot says, any problems you find on the ground only get worse in the air, so don't be afraid to dump the bowl and refill-even I do this from time to time, sometimes midway through a bowl.

Anything you want. There's lots of great stuff out there in all sorts of blends under the sun, from mild American burley blends like Carter Hall and Prince Albert, English blends like Nightcap and Balkan Sobranie, aromatics like CAO's Moontrance, Lane 1Q and Casey Jones' Last Ride. It all depends on where you want to go next.
As for me, I want to try something like the legendary Balkan Sobranie next, but since that's hard to find I'll probably get Hearth and Home's Magnum Opus, which is very close and just as lauded.

Again, up to you.
A new pipe isn't a bad idea, but I'd recommend getting a used (the business calls them "estate") pipe over a new one and spending a couple of bucks on pipe cleaners and alcohol to clean it up vs buying new. I've found pipes from premium name brands this way for a fraction of the price of a new pipe. The pipes usually smoke much better, too. I now have almost 20 pipes and the one that smokes the worst is still the one I decided to buy new (my experience only, others's experiences definitely vary here). Buying estate pipes generally means any clunkers have already been weeded out by other people.

About 15-20 bowls, usually. 2-3 grams of tobacco will fill a standard pipe bowl.

Depends on how much you smoke them and how you take care of them. If you don't smoke much and clean religiously (as I tend to do), then it's ok to leave them in a box like yours. If you smoke them hard and often put them away wet, you'll want a stand so the still-humid pipes can dry out in the open air.

The last bowl I had something like 9 or 10 relights before I called it, most occurring in the second half of the bowl. That's still a lot to me, but it's less than I was doing a month ago.
On a related note, if you're just starting out, get a Bic. It's less discouraging to relight it with a lighter than to see a pile of matches in your ashtray that weren't there an hour before.

I know I keep recommending this pipe everywhere, but it really is a great one to start with. It isn't expensive, smokes really well and if you break it you won't cry-it's easily replaceable for cheap.
As far as the notion that cobs are disposable, they aren't if you don't want them to be, and they only get better after you've smoked them awhile.

GBD Sauvage series bulldog loaded with Royal Yacht. Noticed the RY was a bit crunchy last night and put a few drops of distilled water into it.
Tonight it is spectacular.
As is the pipe. I've noted before that this is perhaps my best smoking pipe, and tonight is no exception. The draw is easy, the smoke is cool, and the flavors outstanding.
As RY is a straight Virginia blend and quite high in nicotine, I fully expect to be half-dizzy at the end of this bowl, and enjoying every woozy second of it.

Is this normal for shops? I've only really been to the one where I moved from and I was on a first name basis with the owner the first day and eventually most of the employees. The service wasn't awful, just very robotic I guess? Should I go back or try to find another shop?

For me what a good smoke consists of is little-no tongue bite, non bland smoke, tobacco blend that burns well, tobacco at the perfect moisture, a proper bowl pack, comfy weather, no expected work calls, and being outdoors

As for good blends there are plenty and that is also personal taste, if you have smoked tobacco before and like the taste; you might be best looking at Dunhill or proper English/Scottish blends (Virginia/Latakia/Cavendish/Oriental mixes with all or some of these). Otherwise aromatics would be a great starting ground/introduction

First off, it tastes good to you.
After that, I look for the physical properties of a well-filled pipe.
To me, a good smoke lights easily; stays lit even if you put it down for a minute or two; the draw of the pipe when packed isn't too tight; it doesn't burn too hot and you can smoke it down to the ashes with a minimum number of relights.
Basically, a good smoke is an effortless and pleasurable one, and the pipe is there for YOU to enjoy, you don't need to keep tending IT.

Just tried Dunhill 965 for the first time yesterday.
The smell of the tobacco itself was very campfire-y (thanks to the presence of Latakia, a smoked tobacco from ghe Midde East), but in the pipe a LOT of subtleties of the tobacco came through.
Really good stuff. I'm glad I tried it.

There has been such a culling of drugstore brands in the past decade or so that if its lasted this long, you can be sure it isn't a clunker. If it was, it would've been gone long ago. The long-time brands that are still around-Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Half and Half, Captain Black, Granger, Sir Walter Raleigh and others-are all classics. Of the ones I've tried-PA, CH, CB and H&H-I liked Carter Hall best for a non-aromatic, and Half and Half for a flavored blend.
I didn't especially like Prince Albert, but that's just me-lots of people love it. Maybe it was that it was my first tobacco and I didn't really know what I was doing yet.

Some of the really cheap aromatic blends taste one-dimensional and don't really like to dry out, but even they're not that bad, they're just cheap. The ones to avoid are the tobaccos that are pipe tobacco in name only-they're roll-your-own cigarette tobaccos that are intentionally mislabeled to get around cigarette taxes. They are generally only found in 1lb bags, are super dry and finely cut like the stuff in cigs. And while you CAN technically smoke them in a pipe, they're best left to the cigarette stuffers.

Burley tends to lighten sharp blends

Orientals can remove bite if you do not add too much

If you mean for what mixed blends would smoke cooler and have less or no bite, look for Latakia forward blends

Latakia forward blends tend to be more forgiving with poorly packed bowls and poor draw pacing

Frogmorton Cellar and Westminster are top picks for Latakia forward too

Any "rules of thumb" on if I'm hitting it too fast. My biggest issue is usually keeping lit and I gauge slowing down on the temperature of the bowl. If it gets uncomfortable to hold I put it down and then ash and tamp when I come back to it.

The best advice that I can offer other than patience (but is also related); would be to make sure you let your tobacco sit out before packing a bowl, do not take all of it out only what you plan on using

Always let your tobacco ~dry out, you do not want crackers/toast level dry, but at the same time you do not want jelly level moist

You can pinch tobacco between your fingers to gauge the moisture, if it sticks it needs to sit

How long is determined by the moisture content of specific blends/tobaccos; any VaPer should be a little moist since Perique is a very moist tobacco, expect to let those sit out slightly longer before packing a bowl

Personally, I could careless how many relights I have on a bowl. As long as I am enjoying myself and relaxing I could just as easily use 50 matches or 1 match

I once heard a nice analogy for human faith and how relighting the bowl instead of puffing back into animation is like relighting one's faith; maybe too deep for this Tibetan magic card image board but it gave me a different look at how I have seen myself and others worry so much about the "perfect 1 match bowls" when really you can lose sight of the main focus behind an action by being so distracted

With that being said, some bowls of mine can go 5 minutes or so without relight and no puff work, other times the same tobacco blend goes out every 30 seconds; outdoor elements play a role I imagine but just relight when it goes out no worries

Virginia is the classic "tongue bite" tobacco thanks to its naturally high sugar content. The sugars naturally hold onto water, that then flashes into the steam biting your tongue when the embers hit it. The same thing also happens with super-goopy aromatics that are very moist, no matter what tobacco is in them.
As for tobaccos that inherently bite less, the classic "no bite" tobacco is Burley, the base tobacco of most American OTC blends. It has much less natural sugar in its leaves, hence much less chance for tongue bite.

The biggest rule of thumb is that if your pipe bowl gets too hot to touch, you're drawing too fast.
If you feel you NEED to draw that much to keep your pipe lit, you've packed your pipe too tight. When this happens to me I let it cool down then dump the bowl into my hand and refill it back with no "packing" allowed-just gravity filled-then relight and very softly tamp as needed.
It usually goes much better after that, plus I can gauge how wet the tobacco was at the bottom of the bowl.

Always pack lighter than you think you need to-you can always tamp tighter.
Always smoke slower than you think you need to-a relight or two is a small price to pay for good flavor all the way down to the end of the bowl.

As for whether it's a good brand for YOU is a different matter, but they're all worth a shot in my eyes. After deciding I didn't like Prince Albert I was leery of trying another OTC, but Carter Hall and H&H both proved to be very enjoyable. At very worst you're out $5-that's a small price to pay.

Dunhill's Deluxe Navy Rolls in a tiny little Butz Choquin don't-know-what-to-call-it pipe.
The bowl is kind of acorn-shaped, but not really an "acorn" pipe as they are commonly executed. The bowl has the double taper typical of a bulldog, but the stem is round.
I looked at some old pipe shape charts and an old Dunhill chart had a similar shape labeled as a "Scandinavian Bulldog", so I guess that's what I'll call it.
Anyway, the DNRs are strong but burn slow, like a flake tobacco should, making a small pipe like this ideal. Any bigger and I'd have a 2-hour smoke.

Just smoked some Fox Hound (Hunter Blend) for the first time, delicious morning or all day blend

It has Latakia, Oriental/Turkish, Virginia but has a very nice sweetness to it that is not overpowering or lacking (not aromatic but from the Orientals)

This has been on back order for over 2 months and finally came in yesterday, I will be trying Rattray's Old Gowrie over the weekend and will report back

I would agree with this, outdoor weather (not limited to rain and wind) have affected how well my bowls burn/stay lit

If you have a really moist blend, sometimes I have even had to let it sit out for 30min-1hr to reach the proper moisture level; it's interesting how a little drying time can make a gurgle blend burn as well as the best blends

Thimble-sized Breezewood stuffed with CAO's Moontrance and Carter Hall.

If Breezewood doesn't sound familiar, that's because it's a brand produced for just a few years in WWII. Kaywoodie experimented with alternative woods they could find in America that would work in lieu of imported briar, which was under Axis control when France fell. So as to not damage their own name, they created sub-brands for the new materials-Breezewood for pipes made of Mountain Laurel and Monterey for pipes made of Manzanita (which they called "Mission Briar"). Neither was a smashing success and both were discontinued when imported briar came back onto the market after the war.
Anyway, the pipe is by far the smallest one I own-maybe 1 gram of tobacco will fit in it-and smoking a wet aromatic in it was not the best idea. It kept going out and I couldn't get any flavor. Carter Hall proved a much better fit, and I found out why this pipe was nearly plugged full of tar when I got it. It's a great pipe for when you just want a short smoke.

I haven't tried it, but apparently SV's "English Mixture" is quite good for an affordable American non-aromatic blend. It's supposed to be the missing link between classic American and English blends. I'll have to get a pouch the next time I see one and report back.

The Cob was its old good self, providing a good smoke to whatever I put in it. So the H&H was enjoyable if not very subtle.
The Meerschaum with 965 in it is a whole different experience altogether. It's like eating an awesome steak after splitting an appetizer of cheese fries-what comes after is in a whole different league than what came before.
The Latakia may not smell great to bystanders, but the small flavors and complexity of the smoke is just outstanding to me. No tongue bite at all, just flavor for days.
I don't love it as much as Royal Yacht (my first REAL pipe tobacco) yet, but it is certainly a great smoke, and the nice clean meerschaum lets me taste all of it.

91% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning-$2 per quart

For less than $20 you too can be on your way to enjoying a good pipeful of tobacco whenever you want

Second, if you dont want to commit cash but still try it, get $5 corncob to start, theyll last a decent bit of time but youll burn through it eventually with regular use, I keep a few to try tobaccos with.

If you already knowmyoull like it, you can gef decent briar pipe for 30ish bucks at a humidor. Super long pipes are called churchwardens, theyre cool and wizard looking, nobody cares nor will they judge you for having one, they smoke just fine as well as long as its good briar. I avoid pipes with metal liners as they tend to get really fucking hot. Just like with knives, there aee crappy gimmick pipes, eg I bought a marble pipe, it smokes fine but really any of my others are better. For the most part, buy whatever you want, get a design and shape you like.

For tobacco, any of the mentioned tins are fine but also humidors will typically let you sample their bulks if you bouht the pipe there, go arpmatic if yiu want sweets, go with a blend if you want tobacco.

As for the pipe memes from days of yore, you can still find them from different eras in estate sales and eBay-super ornate meerschaums, gigantic bowls, all sorts of different stingers, air holes on the bottom of pipe bowls, graphite bowls, pipes made of plastic and so on.

Pic related is just such one meme pipe, known simply as The Pipe. It's got a bowl lining made of pyrolytic graphite-the same stuff they used in ICBM nose cones-and the rest of it is heat-resistant phenolic. Awesome in theory, it was a sensation with new smokers (and most especially their girlfriends, who were the prime marketing demographic) when they hit the market in the 60s. Longtime smokers hated them because they were heavy, gurgled a lot and smoked very hot if you packed and smoked them like a normal pipe. They were also expensive-one cost almost as much as a Dunhill pipe in those days. Now they go for about $10-20 on eBay, while you can't touch a used Dunhill for less than $100.

The DNR has finally dried out to the point where humidity is about ideal. The smoke is very flavorful and the little BC is easy to clench and puff on slowly while doing other things.

This is a huge pipe and I haven't smoked it that much. This is actually my first bowl of aromatic stuff in it.
What a happy accident!
It's perfect for smoking an aromatic like Moontrance. This tobacco really needs that extra bowl space to keep the heat dissipated and in the right temperature range for ideal flavor. Really loving the bourbon vanilla profile-mild and sweet but still interesting at the same time.

You need a humidification set up my dude. I suggest a $5 small jar of propylene glycol gel beads. You could also just get a hockey puck shaped tablet filled with floral foam and soak it in either PG or distilled water for less than a buck (you probably could get by with one for that smaller box), or if you really don't want to spend money at all; you can put a piece of sponge in a shotglass or something similar and soak it in distilled water

Ukraine Pearwood pipes are wooden and often as intricate as Meerschaum

Meerschaum looks like plaster and smells like burnt marshmallows

Pearwood looks like Briar wood but is easier to carve intricate designs Lions/Dragons/Faces/etc

That's never stopped anybody from buying corncob pipes, but most cobs are so low cost as to be disposable anyway.

It's a different story when it's an intricately carved pipe and you pay the cost premium for all of that handwork. People don't generally want to pay that much for a pearwood pipe, no matter how nice it is.
And that's why most hand carvers use briar. As a premium product, it allows them to command a higher price for their work, something the market won't allow them to do with other woods.

You will find more intricate carving on Pearwood sooner than Briar

Pearwood is not garbage in regards to burn out, that is usually caused by improper care as either wood can outlast any owner with proper maintenance and use

Smoking too hot/fast too often, lack of cleaning, improper reaming, improper storage, and many other reasons are why ANY bowl burns out regardless of material

With that being said, in order of heat resistantance:

Briar
Cherrywood
Oak
Pearwood

Recently got into pipes, as I had gotten tired of cigars. I picked up some cheap MM pipes to start with, along with some Captain Black Cherry, and Frog Morton's Cellar. While the Captain Black Cherry isn't that bad, Frog Morton's Cellar blows it out of the water, definitely going to have to get some more after I finish my current tin.

If you like Cellar, I recommend you try other Latakia forward blends like Westminster or Pirate Kake

The problem is not with the material, but the perception among the general public. It makes for a harder sell among people who only want briar, or scared newbies who have been told that if it's not briar it's crap and will burn out.

It's not cough syrup-y, but neither is it particularly dynamic in flavor either, and ultimately I got rid of it. For just a couple dollars more than CB Cherry, you can get Casey Jones' Last Ride, which is a much better tasting cherry blend.

Most people don't smoke these days unless they are out of doors. Pipes are particularly great for something like, hiking, because the pipe itself is fairly durable and the material you smoke can be smashed and crushed without damaging smokability.

Also, going to a nice remote place to enjoy a nice pipe is always pleasant. It adds to the relaxation of being in the great outdoors if you just want to chill.
