Well, there are so many things that are appealing about living in a van/road tripping for years on end. For one, you are living close to the outdoors, as you'll be stepping outside whenever you want to take a piss. This is good. There is definitely lots of freedom present that you don't get when you own/live in a house. You can wake up in a new place by simply driving there.
But, I have a fair amount of stuff. I have tools and a workshop. I own a motorcycle. I like to build furniture. I suppose there is a way to do these things while living in a van. I'd rather have a small cabin somewhere, and road trip occasionally but for extended amount of time (i.e. 4 months or so).
Also, these things burn a lot of fuel compared to my car. I've got a wagon-car and an lay down fully stretched out and sleep in it, while my fuel economy is still relatively good. It works for long road trips, but isn't nearly as cozy as something you can cook inside of.
Hmm...
tldr: gas is too expensive. pic related. I'd love something like this, but can't afford to keep fillin her up.
