Would truck driving make a viable career for someone who wants to go hiking/camping around the country?

My Dad is a truck driver and his home every weekend unless it's busy like during the Winter then it's every 2-3 weekends. I figured I could do it, but instead of going home, I could just stay in whatever town/city I am and find a place to hike or camp.
