Have anyone gone hiking/camping in Japan as a foreigner? Did you have any trouble bringing gear such as knives or hatchet with you?

I'm heading there for a year, and I'd like to bring at least my hatchet and my Leatherman Wave. But I don't want to get in trouble with the local authorities because of it.
