these things are cool to have but not very convenient. I picked up a Sawyer Mini water filter system that came with a filter and foldable bottle that works way better in my opinion. But i like filtering water into clean bottles which takes a little longer but i think is a little more convenient in the long run. I've hiked with people who will just fill 2-3 widemouth bottles with untreated water and just use the lifestraw to drink out them.

But yes they do filter waterborne diseases as long as your not drinking flat out festering water, and theres nothing dead or shitting upstream. when it comes down to it nothing beats straining and boiling

Kind of right. There's little that can be done to treat water near man made waste runoffs. Depending on the chemical composition of the waste, it can take microscopic filtration to even hope to get it, far beyond what any backpacking filters are capable of. And to think that California is recycling their water over and over again. There is no way it's going to be as safe as it should, and it's only getting worse, as the water is still being recycled over and over.

If you're /out/ far enough where man made pollution is not likely, filtering OR boiling should be enough to make the water safe. Depends on your needs, or time restrictions. Safer bet is always to strain what you boil, or filter first.

At least have a cup with you so you can let sediments settle out before using the straw. That will prolong the life of the filter a great deal.

Personally, I'm using this water distiller for base camp. It slides down into the rocket stove, as you can see. I'm still perfecting it. The next step is to install a port for adding more water. Without proper sealing, right now it is at 50% efficiency. Meaning 1 bottle of water makes 1/2 a bottle of distilled water due to the fact I need to get a heat-tolerant silicone gasket sometime.

I do not. I will make a thread about it here on /out/, probably within a month when I have some extra play money to finish it with. I also want more experience with it so I can answer questions and know how viable this is for base camping (though it seems great as is.) I still need to get some end caps to protect it while in storage and such. I also want to use an activated charcoal filter to filter the distilled water when it is done distilling. That is a typical step in this process. Especially since the water tastes like "NEW COPPER" so strongly; which I'm sure will fade over time.

The only caveat to this seems to be cleaning and drying the copper mesh in the column after use. That takes some effort and is easiest done at home. However, that is something that is done normally, so there's plenty of home distillery guides for that online I'm sure. I normally have a big stainless steel stock pot with me when camping that I use for cooking and laundry, so cleaning the mesh will be about as troublesome as washing clothes.

The problem is that you have to drink directly from a source. It doesn't have any way to filter water just for the sake of filtering, you have to suck on it like a big juicy cock. Meaning you can't filter water for cooking, cleaning, etc.

As >>860722 said, you can just drink out of a wide mouth bottle, but then you have to carry wide mouth bottles.

I use a sawyer mini with two smartwater 1L bottles and a platypus if I'm going innadesert. I'm an ultralightfag, so it does exactly what I want.

Use a cup. You know, the one you use for your tea and/or coffee. Bottles are a bit more difficult to wash out after having untreated/unfiltered water in them. Cups are easier and smaller.

I make wine and have a farmer's winery license. I don't like spirits. This is for water only. Since I'm a farmer, I'd use my crops, buy a licensed distillery and get a farmer's distillery license. It is actually a lot cheaper than I thought when I called the extension office about it. But, I certainly wouldn't use >>860829 for making spirits.
