Our neighbors to the east that deal with monsoons and shit always carry an umbrella, because shit's super effective at keeping rain off.

I know, because I was there with my milsurp ponchos that I've always used when rucking and aw shit I was soaked. these other niggers runnin around in flipflops and umbrellas? fuckin laughin at us whiteys. Since then I always carry an umbrella when I'm /out/ and not /operating/

I don't bother with umbrellas and just cope with waterproof trousers +coat as most of the time
I take part in hikes around peak districts so bringing one would just be more weight

and even if I do stay the night, I normally just use my tent for shelter.
