Hey /out/siders, do you guys have any tips for building a burdei or dugout home? Just bought some land here in OH to build a dugout home. Any suggestions or tips? Also general dugout home thread.

I think drainage is important.

Also consider the weight of the roof (natural plant matter, dirt, whatever, etc.) is going to be pretty fucking heavy. You can slap together a one room cabin and have it be fairly forgiving to mistakes. Halfass a dugout and fuck that up, well... at least you built a very nice grave for yourself.

dont make it in a bog.

Use lumber from a mile away

make two exits, unless you are in WW1 situation

dont ignite walls with a stove, make proper candle holders (some prick almost ignited WW1 dugout with 7 people sleeping in dead winter with a candle in plastic cup, because there was no infrastructure for light).

Add chicken wire 20cm off the top of the chimney, in case somebody wants to throw a granade inside

make a proper passive ventilation

Easiest is to just build on a hill. Could build swales. Maybe collect some of that water in a rain garden. Definitely do something other than live in a dark, dank hole.
