you fire the blank see if it scares the bear away from a distance when it comes to 30 feet you double down on it with pepper and back off, if it doesn't stop then continue shooting.

Honestly, I'd shoot into the air to try and scare a bear off first, sure, but if it got within 30ft, I'd unload on the bear. As this poor bastard has proven - pepper spray is not an effective deterrent to a bear who is committed to attacking you.

yeah in 2 seconds but it won't see shit cause of pepper. it might charge in blindly you just shouldn't be where he last seen you.

the way i see it you would shoot the first cloud before he reaches 30 feet and shoot the second right into it's face where it gets there. then move and keep the weapon on it. go for lung shots with the hollows as they would kill it before it can eat you. if it comes close then the ball should pierce the skull easily enough.

I applaud your optimism, but I like to work in certainties, especially when it is concerning the appropriate reaction to a life or death situation. As a result of OPs vid, I am far from certain that bear pepper will stop the bear from being able to attack me if it got within 30ft, and I am far from certain that, if it didn't, I'd have the reaction time to ready, aim and fire a firearm before the bear got to me.

My only concern now is to find a fire arm which will put the animal down the quickest, and I am figuring that's a shotgun with lead and buck at the face as the animal charges.

Of course, your best defense is to prevent them in the first place entirely. You can do this by always going out with a group of 3 or more people, and making lots of noise as you go. Stay away from areas that show signs of recent bear activity, especially carcasses. Try to have the wind blowing your scent in the direction of travel. All of that really helps.

If you do happen to encounter a bear, you have to determine whether the bear is acting defensively or predatorially. In almost all cases, the bear will be on the defensive and afraid of you. Signs include ears pinned back, roaring, stomping, and bluff charges. In this case, try your best to slowly and quietly leave the area. Startling the bear or attacking it will provoke it to attack you. If it does attack, play dead. If you fight back, the bear will keep on attacking until it thinks it has neutralized you as a threat.

If the bear is acting predatorially (ears perked up, approaching you unafraid and curious) you should attempt to scare it away with loud yelling, making yourself look big and threatening, and so forth. If it attacks, fight back.

I think the rule of thumb is to use your weapon if the bear ever comes within 30 feet or so regardless.

3 shots with a ruger sr40 and it was down after the third hit, like 30 yards away.
He walked up, put one it its head.
Trust me, multiple rounds of .40 will fuck up a bear, especially since it has great stopping power and will literally tear straight through the chest cavity.
Guns are never worse that nothing. Bears dont bluff charge, they charge and if you move to higher ground or get in the water they fuck off. If youre in open ground and a bear is moving towards you, its gonna maul you.

Should you choose a shotgun, keep it loaded with slugs. A good option is a large caliber handgun or lever action. The skill it takes to accurately kill a charging bear with a firearm is the limiting factor. Your friend got lucky that a few rounds hit in appropriate spots. The frontal area of a bear is dense, and a 4p is considered way underpowered to stop a large bear.

Common sidearms for bear hunters are usually in the ballpark of .44 magnum, but I would imagine that most calibers over 9mm would be sufficient with the proper ammunition and shot placement. If you're going to pack a shotgun for bear defense, load it with slugs because buck shot won't be very lethal against a bear

The line of reasoning over buck is that you want to ensure that deter the animal from attacking, not necessarily put it down. Even a .44 magnum is inappropriate for grizzlies and minimal for black bears. Guides in Alaska typically carry rifles or slug guns along with very large cans of bear spray. i said it's good enough overall it might be the best to carry just in case because of more rounds and more versatile ammunition choice (almost any 9mm cartridge goes in there). it is also more manageable for the general public than these large caliber guns. even women can handle it altho the guns weight is an issue for them. at the same barrel length it has better pen than .44 no matter what you dream up.

that i never said. 99% the bear you meet won't attack you, you only have like 10% chance that it will continue after a face-full of pepper, after that all bets are off, but your chances to lethally wound the bear and or discourage the further attack are quiet good especially if you keep your cool and aim.

it's not a game about "hurr i'm gonna stop this bear dead in one shot 100%" it's about defending yourself in a very unlikely scenario.

pepper spray is statistically better than a gun. but sometimes it doesn't work that well. using a pepper load in a gun is just bringing the best of two worlds together. go be a nigger somewhere else if you can't understand this much.

if you can find a pepper round for .44 then sure be my guest. i have nothing against large guns i just wouldn't recommend them generally for casual hikers because it's a bit overkill all things considered.

i would fucking kill to legally own a .357 and if i did i would definitely bring it to hiking especially if bears are around. i don't think i would buy two guns you know one for edc and one for bears even if lots of bears would be in our woods. i would just use my .357 in the less than 1% chance i had to out of an incredibly rare rare bear encounter that will probably never happen in my life.

Well because if you're carrying a rifle AND a handgun the handgun is there as a last ditch thing. I wouldn't be too worried about it for bears because I doubt if your rifle fucks up you'll have enough time to draw a handgun.

No, just that if I had to carry something in .357 it'd be a rifle. If someone really wanted to carry a rifle though I would hope they'd use an actual rifle caliber instead of a pistol round. They make some really light bolt guns in some really bad ass chamberings.

Honestly for someone who wanted the best bang for their buck without carrying a magnum revolver I'd suggest a semi auto 10mm. It's comparable to .357 ballisticaly, but you have more capacity and can do follow up shots much faster. It'll also be lighter than most .357s.

yeah i would love to shoot some 10mm sadly the ammo can't be acquired here easily it's rarer than unicorns.

but then we are back to no pepper option (which is arguably works pretty well in defense). full circle. i like revolvers but i don't have a revolver fetish i quite like the ammo versatility tho like i said.

not everything is about putting out the most amount of lead the fastest imo. i would hardly expect to use a gun against any animal frankly humans are more of my worries and for that while high-cap semi pistols are better but shooting people is not an actual thing in my country. i always get back to adding non-lethal capability when i run these loops in my mind.

>BEAR SAFETY.
First rule of being bear safe is make noise. 9 times out of 10 the bears will clear out when they hear you coming. There are exceptions to this but generally is you talk/sing to yourself or wear bear bells tou won't have much issue. The handful of times I've had close calls with bears in didn't do this or I was in a salmon run. More on that later.

Avoid dense brush and thickets when you can. The easiest way to get charged is to sneak up on a bear, and the easiest way for this to happen is in a thicket. If you can't go around make lots of noise and advertise yourself as above. LET THE BEAR KNOW WHERE YOU ARE.

Salmon runs are one of the few times bears will be agressive as the rule. Don't travel alone around runs and both of you need to keep an eye you. Again, make noise.

If your camping, keep food in airtight containers and store it away from camp. You all should already know this!

GO ARMED. BEAR MACE AND FIREARMS BOTH! Mace will DETER a curious or startled bear. If a bear starts acting agressive, try to move away. DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON IT. If it charges, shoot it. Your taking your life in your hands if your carrying anything lighter than a .44 magnum. Personally I carry either a .45-70 lever action or a .460 nitro. 12ga slug is also a good choice. I've got friends who swear by .30-06 but that's their choice.

Above all be aware. Be looking, listening and yes smelling always. Early warning is your best defense.

Granted, calibre doesn't mean jack if you can't hit what your shooting at. What your trying for is first round it's down. The heaviest round you can handle accurately. You should pratice with your brush gun and know how it's going to handle and know where to aim to hit vitals. I've heard of people being lucky with .40 SW and .380 but I wouldn't trust my life on it.

You're going to shoot center of mass anyway, the head is an impossibly small target and the forehead is sloped making your wager all the more entertaining. If you read carefully, you'll notice that I mentioned .44 is NOT a good choice for bear defense. A shotgun with slugs or rifle(high power) is what the guides carry and they go into bear country for a living. That's because these long guns have far more stopping power than any of the aforementioned pistols.

Either way- making noise as you walk, using the camp triangle, and bear bagging all things with a scent is a far more effective plan for bear defense than any gun. I've hiked hundreds of miles without a firearm during the spring and summer without a problem from the local black bears. I also bear bag my toothpaste, never carry flavored chapstik, and keep food away from my tent.

I wish I could find my source from the last time I saw one of these threads, but a study was done over all bear attacks reported in I think 2014. Roughly 1400 cases. While yes, a majority of the spray users escaped with little to no injury, the entire sample of spray users was only around 240 of the 1400, with more than 350 of the almost 800 gun users escaped with 0 harm. That number almost doubles with light injury.

I'm saying your sample size sucks and no reasonablely accurate answer can come from it.

Spray/pepper may not work against all bears. But no bear is bullet resistant.

A Ruger Alaskan in .454 on a guide holster with decent shot placement is better than spray.

I Carry either a mossberg 500 with some Blackmagic slugs or my full stocked Rossi ranch hand in 45 colt. I was a trail guide for a state park. I have had to shoot a charging Grizzly. We carry bear spray but are told to always use a gun. We carry it to keep the liberal tourists happy.

fucking why? grizzly bear top speed is 30 mph. 10 yards in one second is 20 mph.

if you fail to stop it at that distance it will be on top of you in less than a second.
