What if I just took a bag of soilent with me when I went backpacking instead of a stove and pans and food and all that jive?
What am I missing here?

I think the main issue would be water weight? If you took some powder with you and just re-hydrated that I don't think refrigeration is a problem. Just make sure you have some way to ensure water purification if you haven't already.
That said, apparently the stuff is not so great for the enjoyment of food. So obviously some snacks are a must.

If you don't eat it regularly already, be careful going /out/ for a week with only that shit to eat. I know it's supposed to cover everything but sudden changes in diet can really upset your stomach. I would bring some snacks too because you will probably be craving something sweet or salty after a long day hiking and just to boost morale.

Soylent is fucking great, I've survived off it for two weeks out. It was about 90% of my diet.

A single bag is a days worth of meal. It needs 2:1 water to mix, but you can probably mix it with a little over 1:1 as long as its not too sludgy. That in mind, if you go through a bag per day, its also about a quarter of your water intake for the day.
You're not wasting water on it.

You can always add flavor to it.

5lb. Each bag is 16oz, and is a 2000 calories. I ate half of what I should have. The rest was supplemented with beer, and trailmix.
I only bought 7 bags, I was gonna stretch that out to 14 days, but ended up using a lot less.

10lb or so. Nothing physically noticeable. I think all the beer I drank kept me even.
I worked like 12-8 hours a day, and partied the rest. 6 hours of sleep each day or less. Stayed awake for 50 hours on the first weekend. thanks to DOC.

My beer drinking has always been supplemented by equally heavy meals (schweinzhaxe, schnitzel, that sort of fare) so usually my butt is in pretty good shape...

Soylent seems sorta cool and cyberpunky, but I eat for pleasure as much as for nutrition, so i don't think it be a product i would go for.

Yeah, there is always something nice about cooking a meal, but when you dont have the ability, or the will to bring in cooking equipment, start a fire, or have a stove, or cooler full of perishables, Soylent is an excellent alternative.

Watch the Vice documentary on it. It's probably <25min without commercials. Dude eats only Soylent for a month and he talks to the nerd who owns the company and shows how it's made. As I've said before, that's an old documantory. The conditions in which the product is made has changed, and Soylent has been reformulated a few times since.
Less flatulence, no oil bottle, different source of protein, and a much better consistency
I own ver 1.4, its the only one I ever tried. Went through about 21 packets in the last two years. Only use it for outdoor stuff. Not having to portage with a cooler full of food is fucking amazing.

Its being passed up as an acid analogue these days, but if you know what you are doing, shit gives you intense visuals for 14-48 hours, and keeps you awake that long as well.

Not a food product, therefore a supplement. If the FDA gets their hands on that shit the price would triple. Making shit in a food safe environment is hella expensive. Their production would need to go up 5 fold to just to compensate for the extra expense by being food grade.

I don't think they put ANY preservatives in that shit (I think I tried v4 btw). I had some sitting in the fridge for like 5-6 days and came back to see black spots in it. I'd be wary of taking it camping if you're gonna be gone more than a couple days in case the stuff accidentally gets wet... maybe separate out the portions ahead of time and bag them individually in something airtight? I'd be extra careful about following food safety guidelines too; if you mix it, use within 2 hours or throw it out.

Uhhhh I'm pretty sure supplement places still need to ensure their facilities are clean and sanitary. Being a supplement just means they can make retarded claims about what their product does, and that they don't have to make sure whatever substance that's in the product isn't harmful.

The big downside I see is that the claims of being nutritionally complete are based on crushing up a multivitamin into the mix. Without the multivitamin, your micronutrients are not well provided for. If you believe multivitamins are a good way of getting micronutrients, then go for it. I'm just a bit skeptical of it being truly nutritionally complete. Reminds me of the claims of sugar encrusted kiddie cereals claiming to be highly nutritious because they've been sprayed with a vitamin fortified slurry.

I'd like to stay optimistic about it. Some years ago I used to just drink these powdered breakfast pouches mixed into milk before heading to class because it was quick. Before that I just skipped breakfast altogether so I'd like to stay optimistic about the future of Soylent. I can't afford living off of it but I hope they experiment with flavors.

true, almost all of them have low fat as basis, because when you add them to whole milk it makes up the difference +10.5g fat and a +180kcal. so a 350kcal powder solution that is low fat mixed with milk gives you the same performance as fuck expensive soylent mixed with water. 3dl milk is about $0.40 btw.

anyhow i just ran some calcs.
if you buy whey isolate, and take 4 portions a day with 2.5 dl whole milk that runs a $0.6 + $1 = $1.6 per day and what you get for this: complete protein (including all essential amino acids and some extras)
968 kcals, 33.92g fats, 49g carbs, 117.2g protein.

while it is not a complete balanced nutritional profile it a good basis to build on with a couple of bars of chocolate or sandwiches and costs less than a dollar a fucking day!!! obviously the downside is milk is perishable in the ready form butt of course you can buy whole milk powder also if you have a fetish for it (1l would be $0.3 from powder so even cheaper).

for this you would only need to add some dietary fibers and extra carbs and fats from some vegetable source and you got very fucking close tho what soylent offers.

and that is one of the many reasons why soylent is complete bullshit. a portion should be well under a single dollar. $2 for a day would be acceptable for the content. but soylent costs $7...

The only time I really enjoy eating is when it's part of a social function or special treat, which I would still allow myself even if I was on Soylent. Otherwise I just find eating tedious, and this is coming from a man who absolutely loves his food. Daily subsistence fucking sucks. The time spent shopping for ingredients, preparing meals and consuming them is bad enough as it is, and to make matters worse I don't even enjoy the damn meals because I'm poor as hell and the meals suck due to a million cost-saving measures that also rip away all the enjoyment of the meal. Worse still, all I can think of as I consume this budget sustenance is how much it fucking cost me for this. I just want it to be cheaper. If Soylent can do that then I'm all for it. the difference is minuscule is what these anons are saying. if you eat you have a feel of more energy, and more motivation to move. but actual performance if you are properly motivated is not different unless you are top level athlete in a competition where ever little bit counts as your body is a fine tuned machine for that particular task. for hiking lol doesn't fucking matter not one bit.

It's way too expensive for what it is. You can get the same amount of kcal and micros if you buy a gainer mix (carb + protein powder), fiber powder and vitamin and mineral supps for like 100$ a month and protein will be of a higher quality.

gainer mix is usually too expensive for what it can deliver. unless it's well balanced nutritionally and in vitamin profile i would go with whey isolate and add carbs and fats separately from cheap source.

Yeah, I do this too. Make about 5kg of something in the slow cooker and just eat it for days. Only variation being a snack or two and muesli or porridge for breakfast.
I always get weird looks when I tell people that this is how I eat. They just can't comprehend not eating something different every meal.
