Did you stay in a DOC hut or did you just camp where ever? New Zealand is pretty strict in places about wild/stealth camping and they say you are required to inform DOC about it.

also moari's can be be either the best people in the world or among the worst. use your judgement when dealing with them. its normally pretty clear which side they fall on. Samoans are cool as fuck. the pakeha (white people) can be turds but are nice.

learn basic moari phrases to endere yourself
for example if you want ot have lunch try this:
ki ora cuz, care to have us a mean kai?

and if you are swimming always ask the guide if there are any tunefah (ton-ee-fahh) in the water. that shit will kill you.

Both, I camped on DOC Campsites when I was in a group,
wild camped when alone (actually legal in a lot of places, like most parks etc or 500m from any road. Just don't litter)
and stayed in DOC huts when it got colder and I did longer trips where I didn't wanna carry a tent.

Be smart and buy a full/half year ticket for huts (they work for Great Walks only during Off-season, but I recommend only going then anyway) the day you enter, I got it half way through.

Unfortunatly it was closed due to heavy rainfall and rising creeks when I was there. Heard it was quite muddy, but they said the same about Rakiura and that one was doable without much trouble.
I got a few recommendations to do it so I can only forward those, depending on what the weather is like there atm

I'm doing it in Feb, and not quite sure what footwear to go with.
Boots will just fill up with water straight away and not dry out the whole time. But runners mightn't protect enough against the mud.. Thoughts?

I'd always go with boots, but that has medical reasons, too. Good boots shouldnt get wet if you wear gaiters and can dry if you stay in huts.

Popular tracks are usually really well maintained and not a problem for runners, in off season and less popular track you might have to cross some rivers tho, where I much prefer boots. For climbing mountains I also always wear boots.

All in all I'd go for boots
