One time on my /out/ journey in Arizona I bumped into a guy out in the bush who had nothing but a waterbottle and the sun was going down. I was a bit worried about him and asked if he'd be all right. He said he was in search and rescue for 25 years with a grin. I asked him what his best advice is for someone who wants to survive out there.
He said "it's all in your mind, play it cool and you'll be cool, if you panic it's over"
You're never lost, you're never in danger, you just deal with the moment in the moment and stay calm, you can go weeks without food, days and even weeks without water (if you drink your urine) sleep comes when it will even if you have no comfort, know how to conserve heat through isometric flexing and meditate.
One of the best things I've used while /out/ is some organic tobacco to chill when all hope seems lost.
Also fire, fire is crucial.
