See how in the darker brown wood (not the outer bark, and not the heart of the wood) you can clearly see scrape marks? All the scrape marks are very close together, side by side with no spaces between them. If they were claw marks they would be more haphazard and random. Those appear to be something like a deer standing there, scraping away with its lower teeth, then moving its head when it gets down to the heart of the tree, creating the pattern you see. It was getting something from the bark, nutrients or fiber, I don't know.
