Hey /out/ Im looking to get into surfing. Im a 6'3" guy and looking to get a board good for my size that I can progress on. I found a 8 foot used board from craigslist that looks good but a buddy of mine said i should look to get one at least 3 feet taller than me. Any advice or tips for a newbie. Should I know some stuff other than getting in the way of getting in the way out there in the water?

i would highly recommend considering a wave storm board from costco. its the cheapest new board you can find, super floaty and easy to learn on

Is /asp/ going me one of the boards merging with /out/? it makes sense as there is a ton of cross over (kayaking, climbing, diving, even surfing to some extent)... i wonder if there will be rate my squirrel suit threads.

My cousin is a surf instructor and he says to just go to Costco and get the 80 dollar foam board. That's what I learned on when I was a kid, and I see beginners using them all the time at the beach. The boards aren't actually that bad

How easy is surfing?
I´ve always thougt that it must be fun as fuck but it also looks quite difficult. I´ll propably have the chance to give it a try on my next holiday. But as I´m from central europe this will likely be more a one-time thing (at least I won´t be able to do it regularly). So should I even bother trying it or am I better of just renting a body board?
Guess I wouldn´t recommend renting skies or taking skiing lessons to anyone from a tropical country whos just in the mountains for a few days.

I learned to surf on a giant rescue board that my neighbor let me use. he was a beach lifeguard. I would recommend starting on a long thick stable board. no matter what these posers say, it is nothing like skateboarding or snowboarding. getting up is the hardest part. you need to practice just getting up a thousand times.

after you master actually riding waves on a giant foam plank, get a shorty about your height. I am 5 11 and my favorite board was 5 10. get a wide one. the wideness helps with bouncy and helps you turn. after that just buy boards and see what you like.

oh, and don't give a shit about the waves. almost any wave can propel your longboard.

t. ex galveston county beach lifegaurd.

You don't NEED lessons. At first the shorter the board the steeper the learning curve.

If its big enough it'll catch whatever waves are there. Practice getting up on the board over and over and over. I got that part down in about 2 days of practicing for hours.

I'm 6'3 100kg pretty fit and ride boards that are 5'10 to 9' if I was you get a board around 8-9, 21-23wide nothing under that and 3inch thick minimum other wise you'll be giving up surfing pretty quick. Pic related my local

At your size I'd get a 9' or even 10' longboard. A big long board will make it very easy to catch waves and practice standing up, and if you get one that has a more aggressive fin pattern (like a bonzer or thruster) you can still do some maneuvering on it. Especially considering you're a 6'3" guy, you can throw the thing around a bit more than a smaller guy on a longboard.

Whatever you do, don't fall for the hybrid board meme because "well I want to learn but I also want to shred like I have a shortboard brah." You'll get literally the worst of both worlds with one of those.

I'm 5'11" and I absolutely love my 9' board that has a bonzer fin pattern. Making a trip out to California to camp on the beach in San Clemente, San O, and probably somewhere up in norcal in about 2 weeks.
