I think you mean, "consumerist life", and/or "higher technological life". Take for instance those sickles they are using. To this day, a great portion of people on the planet have their lives depend directly on the use of sickles in agriculture and would not be alive if it wasn't for their use. Yet, the sickle is "low tech" and part of your "non-modern life" picture.
