It's been a while since we've had a train hopping thread, hasn't it? I'll be catching out of California by May 12 towards the east coast (New York?). During the first few weeks, I'll mostly be booking it and wont want to waste too much time site seeing and just generally exploring. After a while I'll definitely slow down. Anyone interested in meeting up somewhere along the way?

I'll have about 200 to 300 dollars in emergency funds probably a traveler's check, but don't plan on spending a single cent until I get to where I need to be. I plan on dumpster diving and basically hoboing my way across the US. In the mean time, I'm getting my equipment ready, which includes that obvious (backpack, sleeping bag, emergency mylar, first aid kit, ect), as well as a radio scanner, and I'll be reading and practicing survival and hobo skills.

Full disclaimer: I have absolutely no /out/door skills. At all. I'll be spending this entire month reading and practicing a minimum of 8 hours a day, every day to prepare for catching out. Some things I'm learning is foraging (making sure I don't die from eating a nice looking mushroom), basic survivalism, and... other survival things?
