They're commonly referred to as tree of heaven. They spring up in abandoned lots and thrive in shitty soil conditions. They dont have thorns but they are a major pain in the anus. I call the tree grows in brooklyns because in the book "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", they refer to this tree

This tree is the worst, I loathe it. It is ugly as sin. It can grow pretty much anywhere and easily take over native stands. It grows from seed and runners. If you cut it down and don't treat the stump, it stimulates dozens of runners to start new trees. It has potential cardiotoxic effects. The firewood from it stinks, has low BTU and leaves a ton of ash. And the worst is its leaves give off a chemical that suppresses the growth of many American hardwoods.

I am currently eradicating it from my land. pic related

An easy way to ID them is the crushed leaves smell like peanut butter. Kill them whenever they grow.

Not really. Nokinda herbicide (or pesticide or fungicide) is 100 % safe. "Always read and follow all label instructions". Always wash up very thoroughly after using them.

In my area, they grow in dense thickets along the edge of highways because most stuff doesn't like the rough, gritty soil there or the diesel truck exhaust.

That said, Ailanthus doesn't compete well in established forest stands and can be described as a colonizer tree similar to birch.
