He would ask me "What kind of tree is this?"
I would answer. If I was wrong, he would tell me what it was.
It worked. Took a lot of repitition for a few species, but without pointing out clear identifiers he still eventually made it to where I can see as clear as day what many native species are.
My advice is to spend time in the woods with someone who knows trees.
