also you need to train it, so having a dog is a big decision anyway, being scared of the dark isn't enough reason to get a dog if you ask me
as for the dog running off, you should have a GPS collar or something similar so you can track it
it can be a pain in the ass though, this dog right here was missing for 5 days and the owner was looking everywhere for it until it showed up at a cabin we were staying at, he was lucky it found its way back, the collar was out of power
The most extreme I heard of was a hunting dog they had a while ago was gone for 21 days until they found it, I think this was before they started using tracking collars though. And if you care about your dog, you're kind of worried and stressed for 21 days until it's found.
