So I'm planning to get /out/ this weekend, but I'm broke as fuck. Buying anything over $20 worth of food for the next two days is my limit, and I want a steak. So I'm going to spend $10 on a good steak, and the rest on some other snacks. HOWEVER, I do have some potatoes on my counter which are still good and I was thinking of bringing one or two out wrapped in foil to supplement my food supply.

No butter in the house, and I can't afford to buy some.
What's the best way to cook these bad boys up without the butta'.
I do have olive oil I can bring as a fat instead of butter.

I might make that potato dough beforehand before I head out and keep it in the freezer with foil and cook her up. I had ramen planned for lunch though and the idea of mixing carbs with carbs is brutal though. Guess I could save it for dinner with the steak since it'll be on ice.

There's only one company producing it commercially today, but apparently it was something some people in pre-war Europe did at home when they had an excess of tomatoes. The company making it today is Belgian and the owner got the idea from his grandfather.

Well a lot of people died because monoculture crops are really susceptible to disease and drought.
A similar thing happened with bananas in the early 20th century with bananas. Lots of people starved, some economies almost collapsed and we got a funny song out of it.

And while a plant disease did stunt Ireland's potato crop, the famine was greatly exacerbated by shitty political decisions based on flawed Malthusian population theory.

Another interesting New World crop fuckery that happened was the mass outbreaks of pallegra that occurred when corn was brought to Europe by the Spanish. The Europeans didn't bother to nixtamalize the corn (soak or boil it in an alkili bath) before consuming so they were unable to absorb all the nutritional value and people began to suffer from niacin (b3) deficiency. Google the symptoms of pallegra sometime, it's pretty grizzly.

Don't keep them on your countertop, put them in a paper bag and store them in a cabinet or pantry.

Also don't store potatoes and onions together, they make each other sprout faster.

Jeez, we keep them in the dark in the garage from autumn until spring. They start sprouting at the end of winter but it's still not too bad by that point

i tried to grow winter squashes last summer and i fucking failed, wanted to grow maybe 30 and only got 3 and i am not even sure what i did wrong. i think being in zone 3b is borderline to grow em, maybe i should have started them indoors and put a wee plastic tent over the mounds to make a kind of semi-green house.
i think i will try again but... i think i will put more of my chips on betting i can successfully grow a lot of potatoes. i think i heard sweet potatoes don't keep as long as regular ones tho, bummer
