leave them alone on long distance trails where sections aren't blazed at all, they guide hikers in the right direction. I do however get pissed when I find them at famous views or mountain summits day hiker tourists ruin.

I admit I stack rocks for fun sometimes but only in places with lots of rocks like a river-bank or rock slide. I make an effigy-style; 2 legstones, 1 hip, 1 torso
1 long arm stone aligned with the trail or pointing at something interesting. and a head. This takes 5 mins so feel free to kick.

Yeah, they're used occasionally in parks in the western US when the trail goes over raw stone, I've seen them in California and Utah. For heavily used trails though, it's more popular to delineate the boundaries of a trail with rows of rocks.
