So I have about $20 from my dividend. What should I buy? I might chip out another $20 if it's decent.

What would you buy with 20 - 40 bucks on here?

I thinking a Swiss Army knife maybe an inexpensive leatherman. Something EDC? A waterbottle?

I didn't think much of it when I first got mine, I picked it up as an afterthought whilst buying some other gear, but I fucking love it. It's always in my pack now.

A Buff, it's a long cloth tube that is surprisingly versatile.

I've used mine as a bandana, dust mask, sweat band, balaclava, beanie, sleeping mask, a neck cooler and even a small stuff sack (just tie both ends shut).

The basic buff is made of microfiber coolmax so it breathes well and doesn't cling. They also have ones that are UV rated, ones that are pre-treated with insect repellent and merino wool ones as well.

I've had mine for 5 years now, goes with me every time I step /out/.

I've got the 4 liter one, and it's fucking rad. It got a rope around the edges to use as lash points, and to hang from a tree. It also has 3 different options for removing water. Tiny flip up spout for small stream (perfect for washing hands/showering), quarter inch drinking hole (it protrudes a bit, don't worry) and then a wide mouth with handy plastic grip ring thing around it for filling it up (designed so you can just scoop out of a stream and be able to fill the whole thing).

Only thing is, it's fucking black so the water gets hot as the dickens in summer time. But, its pretty much inevitable.

got a decent headlamp? I also like the collapsible LED lamps you hang up in your tent, but I haven't gotten myself one. I tend to give them as gifts ever since I camped with someone who used one.

In colder days you could position it in sunlight and it may keep your water a little warmer.
If, heaven forbid, you ever needed it to boil water in, the black color will help with the task?
On hot summer days.. wouldn't you usually have it in your pack or cargo pocket out of the sun anyway?

Not him but I would recommend one with a really bright red light. I got a Princeton tec that has 3 red LEDs and its good. Coleman makes/made one too. Coleman actually makes some really decent stuff these days.

To avoid night blindness. There is a chemical shift on the retina that occurs when they are exposed to light. I don't remember quite all the science but it's rods and cones something something.. anyway red and infrared do not trigger this shift. Therefore red light doesn't ruin your night vision and you aren't totally blind when you turn the light off.

Princeton Tec Byte Headlamp

I bought this head lamp 2 years ago and I love it.
It only takes 2 batteries instead of 3 (so really 4 instead of 6 when you factor backups), has red/hi/lo. It's so light that when you drop it it doesn't break and lasts 96 hours (on lo).

I never understand why people buy 100$+ headlamps, do you really need 9000 lumens?

MSR makes a Dromedary-lite that is red, it's lasted me 3 years now (and still going strong) so I treat the "lite" part as being lightweight.

MSR's warranty is awesome too. A friend of mine has managed to break the cap on them twice (don't take this as a sign of poor build quality, he's the only guy I know who's ever broken one and we've no idea how) and both times MSR have just replaced it for free.

I bought one of these the other day for $15 at REI. I like them, except I'm a huge faggot so I invariable drop them on a concrete surface while full at some point so it dents the bottom and makes it not balance correctly when you set it down. Otherwise, it's a good water bottle.

For another $10 or something you can buy a top that provides a 100% stainless steel interior

Yes if you use high it only lasts 2 hours, but the lo setting is good enough for most everything and red is good for map reading, I only use Hi if I'm looking for something specific.

just basic physics that the more light you put out the more battery you use

I go for week long trips and go in with a fresh pair and I have yet to use my back-ups.

I got this Coleman 200 lumen flashlight for $25 at Wal-Mart and it's pretty fantastic. It has a high and low setting. The beam could even compete with some of Fenix's lights.

You missed the 20% coupon codes from a few weeks ago. I used one to knock down the price of a Therm-a-Rest for my girlfriend, then used my dividends and split the remaining cost. She wants to feel like she's sleeping in a goddamned bed when we go out. So I figured this would encourage her to come out more.

*I* wanted to buy cookware I didn't need: either the 1.1 L MSR stainless pot or the GSI Halulite Dualist. I had about $15 in dividends.

I use a Klean Kanteen (32 oz) and a nesting cup and that is my cookware. I typically set up shop by gathering water nearby, getting a fire going, boil the water in the Klean Kanteen, assemble camp, and then once boiled pour some of the contents into the nesting cup to cool off. Once cool, I'll pour it back in the Klean Kanteen.

Not only do I have a good cookware set, I don't have to pack any water purification materials. Can also make charcloth inside a Kleen Kanteen. They don't pack small but they're light, bulletproof, and they should be in every pack.
