Smokies get better once you get pretty deep in them, however you can find a lot better areas to explore in the blue ridge mountains, around the Parkway, which isn't super far away. Those are my stomping grounds, I encourage anyone who can to check the area out. Specifically in and around Pisgah National Forest.

this

the great smoky mountains are a fabulous area to explore with over 800 miles of maintained trails and hundreds more that are not.
i have spent the past 30 years exploring them and still find wonders aplenty.
yes, the commercial aspect outside the park is shit, but no law says you have to swim in it. take the road less traveled.
some of the more popular trails should be avoided especially during peak times(weekends, holidays, etc), but any trail can be all yours at certain times.
just get /out/ and enjoy and tell OP to fuck off.

I went to Jellystone in early May and the park had just opened. About half the roads were closed still, still 3ft of snow on the ground in a lot of places. Nobody there. I stayed at Mammoth and it was dead. My whole second day I drove east through the valleys and didn't see another car the whole day except the same ranger twice. Was glorious, you gotta do it!

I did mangrove kayaking in Thailand, I got assaulted by a pack of monkeys, and I couldn't do anything other than fend with my paddle. I eventually had to leave the kayak and swim away to safety.

Avoid Yosemite Valley at all costs during the summer season. I live 3 hours north of there, fall and spring are pretty nice. Go in October for fall colors and light crowds/easy hotel reservations.

As someone who worked at Yellowstone for 5 years and really got to experience the park for what it is, I can safely say that the things I'd do if I only had a week there are as follows:

TOP SHORT HIKES
>Mt. Washburn, Beaver Ponds, Grebe Lake, Elephant Back, Avalanche Peak
TOP LONGER HIKES
>Osprey Falls/Bunsen Peak, 7-Mile Hole, Electric Peak (not for the faint of heart)

TO DO
>Fishing at Grebe Lake, rainbows literally jumping out of the water all summer long
>Lounge about at Old Faithful Inn and play board games at the bigass table on the 3rd floor while getting free coffee refills from the coffee bar on floor 2
>Watch Old Filthy erupt from the 2nd floor balcony at the Inn, laugh at the cucks who got stuck around stinky chinese/indian tourons on the main boardwalk
>

WHERE TO STAY
>Any NPS campground that is first-come first-served, cheaper than shitty Xanterra campgrounds, just gotta snipe em early in the morning
>The one exception is if you can make/already have Xanterra friends, ask them for their employee # and get a 20% discount off Xanterra sites
>Best NPS campground is Norris but be prepared for Elk and bison to be wandering in the morning
>Best Xanterra campground is anything in the Lake area

TIPS AND TRICKS
>Bring outside food in a cooler, enough for at least a few days.
>The only "reasonably" priced things anywhere in the park is the alcohol, sadly, only at the G-stores tho.
>If you make friends with employees or know people, you can get a "guest pass" to stay in a transient room in employee housing for very cheap, limit: a few days

Sometimes I think they should ban all cars from national parks. Make people park at the entrance and provide shuttle buses/trams to take people to various trailheads. Going to Yellowstone and sitting in traffic jams kind of ruined it for me.
