Dumpstering doesn't have to mean you get covered in shit, a little bit of forethought can have you whole pizzas or bags full of bagels. You may be surprised. Also don't let your ego get in the way of having a good time. You can make money to do anything with some cardboard. On the street, normies and yuppies will assume you are a bum no matter what you do, you may as well live it up.

You could take a small pellet gun or air rifle with you and cap squirrels or bunnies, you can make snares very easily. Food doesn't have to come from man, if you are /out/ you will probably end up loving foraging and hunting small stuff for food.
>enough money for gearYou can get what you need for less than a bill. Any pack will work, it is easy to upgrade when you are on the road. Get warm weather stuff, follow the seasons around and stay where it's warm. This will also let you break into the traveler culture and get you hooked up with the people who can show you what it's all about. Gear wise you need stuff to sleep and a tarp. That's really it. Don't go overboard and you wont hold yourself back.
