Got this Opinel no.9 on Monday for €12. I woodburned the eagle of an American spirit box onto it as someone just brought me back two boxes from the USA.
Any one else mark the handle or blade?

just dont do it on the edge, but on the spine

Traditional symbols of my nation, sign of the watersnake on top, sign of the god of thunder on the side. Got a sign of the god of good harvest oppite the watersnake sign.

Intend to add more, just have to come up with a nice variation.

There is a tool for it called a woodburner which is like a soldering iron but with heads you can change. Basically the metal tip gets hot and when touched to wood burns it, they are fairly cheap. For this I drew on the design with a pencil and then burned it, I would recommend burning some wooden spoons for practice as they are so cheap.

you can pretty much use anything with a metal tip that you heat up

But you can't do fine detail and curves. And it would tak a long time to colour an area.

Harbor Freight sells a soldering iron with ten or so different tips for a few bucks; it burns wood just fine.

idd, if you want good results a woodburner or a soldering iron are definetely the way to go

Confirmed, if anyone wants to do simple woodburning or try it out before you go out and buy an actual woodburner, soldering irons are the way to go.

The first opinel was invented in france in 1890 as the working man's knife. The lock was added in 1955 and the locking shut bit was added in 2000. They were originally numbered 1-12 but the one was removed as it was too small, the 11 was removed as it was to like the 12 and the 13 was added as a novelty. Picasso used a opinel knife in some of his sculptures.
