The shit would only work with just about perfectly seasoned hickory or oak. All evergreens would burn too hot, green wood wouldn't burn in that configuration at all. So you'd either need to bring the wood or get extremely fucking lucky and have a chainsaw and maul with you.

I agree. I think that the aparatus on the op was designed for hipster/tumblr patio bbqs/car camping arrangements. It would look cool and would work as a conversation starter, but I can't think of someone, even with minimal experience in camps, bringing one with them.
