I recently lost my license due to a health issue and have to walk to work. I would rather bike to work, but I don't know which bikes to look at; Will you help me /out?
I live in the uppernorthwest of ohio, so snow might be an issue at points...mostly I am looking for something study and solid. Not some cheap gear shifting fuckup.

When I was poor and getting into cycling, I went to the local bike co-op with a solid frame I bought off Craigslist. The folks there held my hand through rebuilding the thing, let me take parts off the junk bikes there for free, didn't charge me shit. Paid $65 for that frame that I still ride today.

This won't work if you're a pussy. I had to deal with a lot of meth-addled bums, crustpunks, "travellers", and quite a few insane people. If you have the balls, this is a great way to gain some knowledge you'll need as a bike owner anyway.

I mean don't get me wrong, im not rich or anything, but If I am going to buy a bike I am going to buy the right one. I've had my fair share of frankenbikes i've put together before, as a kid, now I am just looking for something that won't strain me so much.

They do sell larger stabilizing wheels adult sized bikes (like training wheels, but better), maybe you should consider that or a trike? Could be dangerous seizing on a bike, esp in traffic.

Instead of always pedaling with the same force at all times, you can change gears to use more or less force to ride your bike. This allows you to go further distances without becoming tired and makes going uphill easier. Gears do require a bit more maintenance so that is something your going to have to take into consideration.

The other anon was being a dick about it, but if you get random seizures then wearing some knee/elbow pads can save you from devastating injuries.

I was looking at the Trek Allant 7.2 it looks pretty decent, yet still I don't know much about bikes. I can fix gears and put them together, but I have always built frankenbikes from various bikes that had been fucked someway or another.

This is my first non-frankenbike purchase.

When you travel as much as I use to you wind up getting sideswiped, mugged, hit, shit happens in the real world kiddo. It's not a joke, the unfortunate conditions resulting from my travels I do not regret one bit as they can be controlled by modern medicine.
