The reason Canada's (and Alaska's for that matter) bush is so harsh is that there's virtually no food available unless you can hunt and know the area, plus the western-most part of that yellow area is Canadian shield which is a severely eroded mountain range. This means there is essentially no flat ground and often the terrain consists of berm-like rock formations one after the other for miles so just covering ground is exhausting.
